Janelle Monáe - Wondaland

Just came up blasting on my iPod while shuffling...too FUNKY! From 2010's critically-acclaimed release, The ArchAndroid (Suites I and II).

I think it's one of the only few Janelle songs I like...another good one is Mushrooms and Roses, reminds me of the Beatles sound.

"Mushrooms and Roses" gives me life! Experimental and funky. Gives me a Beatles/Hendrix vibe. headbang

She got more exposure with her debut LP, The ArchAndroid (Suites I and II), but she hasn't gotten her breakthrough as of yet. I'm just curious to see what she will deliver after the next and final suite.

The ArchAndroid is actually suites II & III. Suite I was her EP Metropolis: The Chase.

And yes, Wondaland is a cool groove. nod

"Mushrooms & Roses" is so atmospheric, love everything about this song. I know some might not hear it, but I actually think its a direct ode to The Beatles' psychedelic period.

Her very first album, "The Audition" is really good too, it's deleted now I think. She used to sell it out of the trunk of her car before she signed with Bad Boy, and even back then she was singing about androids and shit.

It's out there.....

Yeah I've been listening to that album alot too and it is a good effort. Even before The Audition was made, she was working with OutKast on the Idlewild project, which she made great contributions as well. She was already branching out on the cyber space concept, but it wasn't really established as it was on the Metropolis: The Chase Suite EP and The ArchAndroid.

I do not like her. Her voice is too polished and clean for me (Broadway) and her music is entirely reminiscent of The Dungeon Family (are they producing her stuff? If so, I'd rather listen to some Outkast. If not, someone is mining their sound).

And her android concept is boring - she's just trying too hard to be interesting and its a FAIL.

IMO
