Beyoncé to Perform at 2011 BET AwardsThe R&B diva is added to the star-studded lineup of talent.
And the night just keeps getting better! Beyoncé has just been added as a performer for this year's 2011 BET Awards. She joins the already stellar lineup, which includes Chris Brown, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne and Drake. With her high-energy dance moves and impressive vocal range, Beyoncé is sure to once again make history.
Never one to disappoint, Beyoncé knows how to heat things up at the BET Awards. Her solo performances date all the way back to 2003, when she and Jay-Z did their classic "Crazy in Love." Then, in 2006, Bey worked the floor like no other when she (with a little help from Hov) introduced fans to her smash hit "Deja Vu." And who could forget the futuristic outfit she rocked in 2007 for her amazing performance of "Get Me Bodied." Even when she just uses her vocals, as she did in 2009 when she sang her version of "Ave Maria," Beyoncé knows how to bring the crowd to its feet.
So, with Beyoncé now on the ticket, the 2011 BET Awards show is even more guaranteed to be a night to remember. Be sure to tune in to the BET Awards when it airs live on Sunday, June 26, at 8P/7C!

Sideshow honoring Patti LaBelle, this year's BET Lifetime Achievement Award winner.
But I'm a bit peeved they still got a few facts wrong.
For one, The Blue Belles were still the Blue Belles when they signed with Atlantic Records in 1965, not 1971 as the timeline suggested. They became Labelle before signing with Warner Bros in 1971.
Plus Patti didn't win a Grammy for "The Best is Yet to Come", that went to Chaka Khan I believe for "Bebop Medley".

The BET Awards are almost always a snooze fest (except last year's BET Awards and that was because of Prince and El DeBarge), but the organizers of the BET Lifetime Achievement Awards could have considered someone other than Patti Labelle. I'm not a fan of hers, but I know she is deserving of it, but what about Parliament Funkadelic, The Ohio Players, The Temptations or even posthemous Lifetime Achievement Awards for people like Rick James, Teena Marie or as improbable as it sounds Miles Davis. Only way to make this somewhat entertaining for me would be if Prince paid tribute to Patti Labelle like she did him, but if he didn't perform at his own tribute, then he'll be less inclined to do it this year (Didn't count the year he played with Stevie, India Arie, and Yolanda Adams, because he was there to promote 3121 and he's probably closer to Chaka, so it probably meant more for him to honor Chaka at that time) 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

All award shows are boring, except that one where Susan Lucci finally won. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I will not be watching for the following reasons:
1. Recording artists (not musicians, there is a distinction between the two terms) are offered too much attention and an abilitiy to offer too much influence.
2. I am embarrassed, as a black man, to see coons shucking and jiving with diamonds and fancy clothes on while my 5th grade teacher makes 50K - a moral stand or accusation? Yes...but you can kiss my arse.
3. When there is a BET award for the best teacher, philosopher, theologian, social worker, parent, FATHER, mom, doctor, lawyer, businessperson, you get my point, then I'll watch.
Otherwise, Keri Hilson and Lil' Wayne are boring and don't mean much existentially to me or existentially as a Black man. Am I deep? Yeah, probably. Am I shallow? definitely not. Can you watch this show without being shallow while deep? Sure.
But aren't you embarrassed? All this show says to me is that whites love it when we put on clown outfits to dance and sing about absolutley nothing.
So wutevez.

This is probably why Aretha turned down the Lifetime Achievement Award, if they offered it to her first. I almost wished Patti turned it down as well, but she is probably thinking that these kids need to be reminded of the legends who came way before them. To lose Aretha's presence at the show is a huge PR mess for BET, and they did the only face-saving move they could. To lose both her and Patti, over the direction they have gone in the last decade, would have been a nightmare. Gladys would probably have said no, and Chaka would probably have been a toss-up on whether she would accept or not.
The big question here is this: Will they pay tribute to those who are no longer with us? We lost Clarence Clemons last week. Who will speak for him? I would think Chuck D. would be appropriate to speak on the legacy of Gil Scott-Heron.
You can bet that Snoop Dogg, Warren G. and the rest of the L.B.C. will pay tribute to Nate Dogg, if they pay tributes at all on this show. But who will speak for Teena Marie? First name that comes to mind is her daughter Alia Rose, because they both went to just about every BET Awards show since 2004. I'm not so sure that Alia will show up for this one. The only other person I can think of who is capable of giving Lady T. a proper tribute is Lisa Stansfield. She's been M.I.A. for a long time (too long, I would add), and she is the only other white female solo artist with a #1 R&B hit (she has 3).
The only reason I would watch (actually, flip back and forth from this program to another) is to see if they pay tribute to those who have passed. Other than that, I haven't watched a big part of this show since they paid tribute to Gerald Levert. I think that was back in 2007. [Edited 6/26/11 16:10pm] [Edited 6/26/11 16:14pm]

Damn, that just went on waaaaay too long. It was funny and all, but the Patti vs ReRe segment was just overkill.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I agree. Patti's comments went over the minute, didn't even get a chance for ReeRee to get back at her because to me she had the strongest comebacks. "Your eyebrows are rebelling, girl, they're trying to get over the rainbow" and then showing Patti - " "
Also, why was Patti the one sounding like a white girl?!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Gladys got hers in 2007 (I think) and Chaka got hers a year before (2006) if I'm not mistaken. It was either Patti or Stevie Wonder (both of whom have made multiple appearances at the awards show since it started).

How did I miss that? Obviously it's been a long time since I watched one of these shows from beginning to end.
