But even some of Kenny Rogers' greatest hits that crossover to Top 40 pop radio still had that traditional country sound. By 21st century standard, Kenny is more old-school than Garth.

A lot of the pop/rock acts of the 1970s would combine country in their sound such as The Allman Brothers, The Eagles, and Linda Rondstadt so the lines were really blurred back then but it seemed more like the pop/rock world trying to combine country with their pop/rock rather than the country world trying to combine pop/rock in their country. And then after disco's "death", remember a lot of white people wanted to get as far away from "black" as they could so naturally some of the country acts were making the pop charts in the early 1980s.

But by the mid 1980s when new wave, punk rock, heavy metal, etc. started taking over pop/rock radio, country had become shunned by a lot of white people and was considered their "parent's music". You didn't see too many young white people during that era openly listening to country and the ones that did were labeled hillbillies and rednecks and a lot of them were. But then again, a lot of those head bangers were rednecks too. lol Anyway, when the 1990s came along, it seemed a lot of country acts were trying to get on pop radio because country had become "uncool". That's the difference between the 1990s country acts who intentionally tried to get on pop radio as opposed to the early 1980s ones who just happened to make it to pop radio because people were trying to get as far away from disco as possible.

I know. We talked about that in a previous thread concerning The Oak Ridge Boys. lol

Shania was definitely the female Garth Brooks. nod

yeah, but she was better, for several reasons:

a) BETTER singles (real hits)

b) less albums (Garth releasing a new album every 10 months in the early-90s was just overkill)

c) better ass lol

Agree with all 3 points! nod And lets not overlook the fact that Come On Over gave Shania her Thriller-like experience when it became THE biggest selling album of the 1990's.

I was just thinking that if this thread has a sequel, it should be "Why Garth Brooks and NOT Billy Ray Cyrus?!?". At one time, it seem like Billy Ray could have been a potential threat to Garth but instead got curse with the one-hit wonder status.

I saw a man on the streets of downtown Jackson a few months ago that looked just like him except he was wearing overalls. He was from some small town and was in Jackson looking for the courthouse and he came up to me asking me for directions.

I thought it was funny as hell the reason that he came up to me of all people and asked for directions. The courhouse is right next to the main branch of the police department so there were black policemen walking everywhere and also professional black people in business clothes all over the streets. When he came up to me he said...."Oh thank God, another white person! I'm not from Jackson and I'm looking for the courthouse. My Lord, I'm scared for my life on these rough streets!". falloff

It's easy for people that live on the coasts and in cities to think that racism doesn't exist anymore but in "small town America" you can still run into some very racist people. Kind of funny that the Republican Party bends over backwards to describe those small towns as the "real" America. lol

It's a shame, isn't it? Even living on the coasts (east, here) I still see it. It's not as in-your-face as it probably is in some parts of the deep south and middle America, but it definately still exists. And it's more apparent than ever now that we have a black president, but now I'm stepping off of my soapbox...

Racism hasn't changed, it's transformed. The number cases that come across my desk hasn't changed... not one one eye ota. Police brutality is alive and well, the Klan in blue. The shame comes, when anyone Black thinks racism is no more. It never ceases to amaze when young Black adults come into my office looking shell shocked. Lying to yourself and to your children is a very dangerous thing. To some degree denial in my community has always been and it goes a long way in explaining why wherever we live in the world, someone has their boot on our necks.

I'm so glad i'm from the uk and couldn't name a single Garth Brooks single let alone whistle one, counrty isn't a genre that i'm overly familier with, apart from a few Johnny Cash albums with a few Ryan Adams albums and Crosby Stlls and Nash i don't know alot about country. I do have a soft spot for Shani aswell (a guilty pleasure, don't know why!)

It was so hypocritical to me at the end of Johnny Cash's music career and life, people in the CW community feel over themselves to give him praise. Yet, Mr. Cash couldn't get a record played on the radio in the States.

Very true. It's hidden now but down here, they're almost out in the open on the internet. If you go to the Clarion Ledger's website and read some of the readers' comments about particular articles, "Jackson" is their new code word for "black". Jackson is 80% black now and has a black mayor and the ones from the suburbs are constantly downing it. Yes, Jackson is rough as hell but there are safe parts also. Northeast Jackson and Fondren are safe but too expensive and downtown is safe also but it is mostly office buildings and very few residences. I live in a suburb town now but that's only because I can't afford to live in a safe area of Jackson. If I could, I'd still prefer to be there.

I know that country is a successful genre in the USA, but I've recently heard the Greatest Hits of this guy, and beyond Ain't Goin' Down and Thunder Rolls, the rest of the songs are very generic, uninspired or just BLAND. I was looking for real, timeless country-rock hits but I only found CRAP neutral

why was this guy so popular back in the day (89-94)????? dead

jezz, I really need to listen to some Johnny Cash now, or I'll die...

I read somewhere that country music fans are one of the few groups that still buy actual CDs and they're dedicated to their artists. They actually support them throughout their careers be it good or bad. It's not the same as the fickle pop/hip hop landscape. If you look at country artists they go platinum quite easily.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

People in rural areas are less likely to have a computer, and where my grandmother lives, there is no internet service. Cell phones don't work there either because there's no cell towers. You have to drive 20 miles to get to a grocery store.

true

also, country fans will buy country albums as long as the music is country lol. I mean, they don't truly care for good singles, experimentation, etc. That's the main difference between country fans and pop fans, for example...
