Sly & The Family Stone at Coachella 2010

I came across a few videos this weekend of Sly & The Family Stone performing at the Coachchella Music Festival last summer and I was stunningly floored. Sure, I've heard mixed to outright horrible reception on Sly's performances of recent times, but I never saw a performance that was so frightening and incredibly sad. I even shed some tears this weekend over seeing these clips. This is just complete madness. WOW!

Sad seeing such an icon in that condition. I've always loved his music.

I feel fortunate I got to see Sly as a guest with George Clinton and P-Funk in early 2010. He came out and did about hald of If You Want Me To Stay and a few bars of Thank You, then disappeared. Not that it was all that great, but I did get to see him sing for the same amount of time as I would if I had spent $80 to see "The Family Stone".

It was kind of a special moment - like "we may never pass this way again".., but more for the rarity of seeing him than the excellence of the performance. He didn't melt down or anything, just didn't stay up there very long.

Rest of the P-Funk show was hot, though!

I really wish he could admit that he needs professional help. Why won't someone do a tough intervention on Sly? sad
