Pretty diverse here too. For me it has never been about the genre, but the music itself. Genres don't matter to me.
I gravitate more towards specific artists, than whatever genre an artist is tied around. Once I listen to music I like, I would sometimes go out and find every piece of music by that artist regardless what section or category.

I wonder how much the ipod/itunes component of today’s music plays into people’s sense of diversity in their musical library. With the ability to download a single song so easily and pile tons of music onto an mp3 player, some people may feel that because they have a single song from Marvin Gaye, K’Naan, Iron Maiden, and Journey on their headphones that they have broad musical tastes. I guess I am wondering how many people are looking at the outliers, if you will, to find diversity, rather than the core of their musical collection. It is my experience that most people listen to a core type of music. And I don't find anything wrong with that.

I only like GOOD music. | |

I agree that some people are exxagerating. That being said, there are many who do have diverse taste in music. Sometimes i like listening to a pop ballad, other times hard rock, then maybe funk and disco or something. But i cant pretend to like everything, i can't stand grunge music and i dont like regaee too much either except a few bob marley songs.

Maybe, but I don't think this is necessarily it. The wide criticism of popular radio is that it not only fails to represent a true diversity of music, but gives voice only to immediately accessible -- and therefore often quite trifling -- examples of certain fixed genres.
Even the biggest pizza fan in the world (and maybe particularly the biggest pizza fan in the world) would get sick of the same Domino's pepperoni night after night. [Edited 5/17/11 7:08am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say... If something strikes me--either an artist or song, I don't care about the label. And I like many, many different types of artists.

Good point... Personally, for me, I'm an album guy. I can't consider someone a favorite artist unless I have complete CD's and in most cases, complete discographies on physical Cd's or vinyl.
I do have single Itunes tracks too though, for the occasional song I here on radio, but not willing to take a chance on purchasing the whole album---usually people like Kesha or general one hit wonders.

If you have a wider cultural exposure.... you tend to have a broader palette. One should not assume their life journey has been the same for all.

I believe myself to be decently diverse.
I enjoy Rock, Pop, R&B, Hip-hop, Soul, Classic Rock, Disco, Latin Boogaloo, Salsa, Merengue, Guaguanco/Rhumba, Boleros, Mexican Rancheras, Mexican mariachis, Latin pop, Latin rock, Cumbia, Punta, Marimba, and probably a few others that I can't think of right now.
I dislike Heavy Metal, most Country, and can't get into Gospel. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I forgot Pop Music, Movie Soundtracks and yes, I like elevator music too.
To everyone, don't start messin' with me about my love of elevator music !!

I like a bit of elevator music too so you got my vote. I usually like the kind they play on "The Weather Channel".

That's me, and I define my musical tastes based on what I own in album and regulalry listen to. If you look at my itunes purchases, that is actually very "diverse" but in my opinion, not at all representative of my core music tastes. Those songs are for the most part, one offs-songs that I liked from many different people but who did not have music that I enjoyed in a significant enough way to purchase an entire album. For the most part if I look at any individual artist or song in my itunes purchases, they are not essential to my musical tastes, but sort of "nice to have".

My taste is pretty diverse, but at the same time I can be pretty narrow-minded within a genre. I honestly try to avoid that "criticize before opening eyes" syndrome, so I don't mouth off about things I don't know fully.

Very diverse:
Blues, rock(depending if it has that Jimi vibe) and blues-rock;smooth jazz;not too much into poppy-ass, bubble gum music.
Blues/soul, some r&b, some, calypso, various forms of salsa, and depending on the artist; reggae-depending on the vibe/artist

Most people don't realize how diverse Salsa can be.
I'm partial to Cuban Rhumba/Guaguanco-based "Salsa", the stuff from Fania Records in the 70's (Hector Lavoe, Celia Cruz, etc.), and even the Columbian Salsa (Joe Arroyo, Fruko ys sus Tesos, etc.).
Even though New York City is the birthplace of modern Salsa, I really don't like the stuff that was being put out in the 80's here. Too heavy on the brass and they got rid of the ivory.
It wasn't until Gloria Estefan rediscovered her Latin roots and put out "Mi Tierra" and Marc Anthony abandoned freestyle to put out his classic salsa hits, that USA-based salsa got a shot in the arm. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Not very diverse to be honest. I (appreciate) a lot of musical styles, but the ones I emotionally/financially invest in are few.
The joy of finding stuff I wasn't aware of/exposed to previously is still there, which is good enough for me.

I listen to most music, with the exception of heavy metal and most rap; however, I'm working on being more open to these genres.
All music has something to say, so I'm tryin' like crazy to hear the different voices!

I'm going to mess with you about it from now on.
No, I would never do that. Even though I don't like elevator music, I do respect the fact there are talented musicians that make elevator music. But at least you know that a lot of people consider it as "uncool" music and have a sense of humor about it. You're secure with yourself.
However.......don't be offended when I use it as a weapon to compare to shit hop (tempo-wise) by using a genre of music that is considered "uncool" to compare to shit hop to make it's listeners not want to feel like a bunch of dorky geeks for listening to shit hop. That's always been one of my faaaavorite tactics against them......."You know I could put a shit hop record on one turntable and a classical record on another turntable and I would have to slow the tempo down on the classical record in order to mix and blend the two. Now you know y'all some dorky ass motherfuckers when you're slower than classical music".....Hey, nobody wants to be considered "uncool" and I've seen some of them (the shit hoppers) get pissed. And of course, I just say to myself, "mission accomplished".

Hey, back when I had cable, at least some of those Weather Channel songs had a little snap to them. I'd much rather hear them than clips of those damn "American Idiot" contestants catterwalling away while the TV listings scroll underneath their videos on the TV Guide Channel.
