Journey

So been listening to my Journey cd's recently, and i have to admit there's some about journey... i mean i know back in the day despite being HUGE they got a lot of shit for being a cheesy rock ballad band. Nowadays they seem to get a lot more credit and just about everyone know's journey while they do sing probably TO MANY ballads i dig them a lot.

Steve Perry stepping in as vocalist was a wise move he just has a powerful voice! and the whole band is just great the musicianship is top notch. Escape was my first Journey record with the obvious hits Don't Stop Believing, Open arms, Who's Crying Now & Stone In Love.

Other gems include my favorite song on the album Mother, Father & Escape

Frontiers is another fantastic record, Separate Way's, Chain Reaction, After The Fall, Ask The Lonely, Faithfully, Back Talk Only The Young

even some of there pre Perry stuff was great! the next album especially! it was very Rush meets Santana, which Neal was in before he started Journey biggrin

I also liked Raised On Radio which is where Perry had tons of control and thing's started to slip a bit... but Suzanne is a rocking song as is Be Good To Yourself & Positive touch.

Any one else dig Journey cool

Big fan of Journey (and not afraid to admit that). I don't mind the first few albums, but I think they're rather forgettable. There was a lot better progressive/fusion stuff out there at the time. The mid-seventies Journey just couldn't seem to find their niche. I really enjoy the vocal interplay between Rolie and Perry, when Perry first joined the band. To this day, one of my favorites is the one-two punch of Feeling That Way/Anytime. They started to hit their stride with Infinity. Don't really mind that they drifted toward the so-called AOR route (rather than their early prog/fusion sound). As you stated, the musicianship was/is always great. My favorite album of theirs is Frontiers, and I really enjoy most of the Perry/post-Perry albums. I did have a hard time with the Augeri years, though (Arrival, Generations). They just didn't have anything memorable on them (except Faith in the Heartland). Augeri's voice didn't seem to hold up (thought they sounded better with drummer Castronovo singing lead at the time). I will say that, unlike some, I have absolutely no problems with Arnel Pineda slnging lead now. I love his voice (and I'm quite sick of people saying he's just a Perry clone). I think Revelation was the best overall album they've done since Frontiers. I'm definitely looking forward to their new one, Eclipse (out this month).

Huge Journey fan here.

Although I like Steve Perry, Arnel Pineda brings a new energy and stage presence to Journey something they have been missing for ages.

Arnel is definately is not a SP clone.. He is his own person and so amazing.

So proud of him.

Good to hear I'm not alone in my admiration of Arnel. Yeah, they did not have the current energy and stage presence, when Augeri was in the band. Pineda seems to have given them a jolt of youth and inspiration. Schon talks about their new one (Eclipse) being their modern Escape (whether that's just personal marketing or not, he's speaking that highly of it). Fun to see them doing well again. I missed Journey in the late 80s/early 90s (maybe the absense was inevitable, considering the early 90s Grunge takeover of anything rock-related). Glad to have 'em back around nowadays.

Infinity is my fave Journey album. Perry's voice is perfection imo. Fell out of them after he left. Heard the new guy is decent...but have no desire to see/listen to them without Perry.

Steve Perry has a good voice, but basically he was copying Sam Cooke's vocal style.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Loooove Journey. They were the first Rock band I ever really listened to. I mentioned in another thread that Escape was the only Rock record that my mom ever bought and she wore it out!! Played it to death and we still have the original vinyl record. I was also into space ships and astronauts, as that's what I wanted to be when I was 4 years old... I used to sit and stare at the album art and look at the pictures and sincerely thought that they were astronauts who also played in a band and that added to my enjoyment of the music. smile

Steve Perry is one of my all time favorite singers. Amazing!! Such a soulful delivery, and the tone of his voice and of course the high notes. He had all the little subtleties of what makes a great singer to me---the vibrato, the control, the dynamics..etc Still They Ride has all I could ever ask for in a singer. Fabulous. And Neal Schon...MAN!! What a guitar player!! Aside from Fusion guys like Al Di Meola, there weren't too many guys doing that fast alternate picking so convincingly in the late 70's and his melodic touch is still unmatched.

And the songs...too many great ones to mention. I am partial to the Jon Cain years, though I own all the records. I think Frontiers is my favorite. Non-fans don't usually mention the Rocking songs, but Edge Of The Blade is truly butt kicking and I love the futuristic vibe on the title track. Send Her My Love is a gorgeous tune.

Yeah, it's true. Steve Perry has said that in almost every interview of his that I read. Sam Cooke is his idol.

True. But somehow he still sounds like Steve and I love his voice. He's always freely admitted that Sam was his idol.

I'll always love Journey and I regret not seeing them live back in the day.

Yeah i agree on that too, Steve was a great thing for this band OF COURSE but people that say "how can they go on without him" also dont realize that STEVE isnt an original member himself, i mean, if those people follow their words of "no one else should be in a band but original members" then you never would have had Steve in this band to begin with, also another great replacement in a band, Tommy Shaw of STYX was not an original member, he came in and that band went into becoming the biggest thing for a good 5-6 year period, couldnt touch them. So the theory on replacing members is a nice "nostalgic" thing to hang on to, but like someone once said, "if a family member dies" do you stop being a family?

Anybody listened to this yet? I'm loving at the moment, 11 tracks of which only 3 are Ballads! which is a record for Journey, easily their best since Raised On Radio, i will recommend this to anyone that liked Revelation and Trial By Fire.

Journey was great! Some of their songs just hit the mark! Prince was definitely listening to Neal Schon. Listen to 'Faithfully'. The solo in 'Purple Rain' has the same emotional feeling. Not hard to imagine as Neal was in Santana(one of Prince's biggest influences) and on Betty Davis' debut album with Larry Graham and Greg Errico so...
