What's Going On vs. There's A Riot Goin' On

We've probably been through this before, but...

Both classic soul statements and highly individualized visions from the early 1970s (released seven months apart from each other within the same year), but if you had to go with one, whose record do you prefer: Sly's or Marvin's?

SLY ALL THE WAY.

but to be honest i never sat down to listen to Marvin's album. Just heard the famous tracks on various compilations. But i could never really get into Marvin like that.

But I love the Murky quality of Sly's songs around this time.

IMHO they're not even comparable. One's a soul-pop-jazz classic that talked about social issues, another one's a dark, funky piece of art that is as ahead of its time as it was 40 years ago.

Both albums are masterpieces. I can't compare 'em. Won't ever try.

Hmmm..

vote's for Sly. Marvin's is a classic, but repeated listenability goes to Sly.

As a child growing up in the 70's, it would've been easy to say Sly. (He was the man back then)

But now today, between the 2, "What's Going On" biggrin

Sly Stone.

That album is dark. It feels like a tribe of demons were the audience in that studio.

I see it like that also Timmy! They are two different beasts sonically and stylistically, but they compliment each other in terms of what they achieved. They are both paramount achievements in terms of socio-political concepts and messages. One is more direct and obvious, while the other is insular and dark as hell. So I personally can't compare either masterpiece, but I thought it would be fun to see what people believe was superior.

Sly's is a landmark album, but I enjoy listening to What's Going On more.

IDK about Riot... yeah I can kinda see the "socio-political" concept with the album cover but the tracks ON the album seem more PERSONAL to me. I think it was personal with WGO too but with Sly, it was as if he was bitter with himself. You can defintiely hear it in songs like "Time" and "Family Affair". Just this bitter growl and snarl he uses on both of them.
