Interesting you posted a thread on Nina Simone. Yesterday on Millie Jackson's show in Dallas, she told a story of how she saw Nina at a Patti Labelle show in NYC in the 80s. She said Patti invited Nina on stage to sing and Nina came up and wouldn't leave.
She said they gave Nina the mic and she sang a bit and just took a seat on stage with the piano player. Patti then had to get security to escourt her off of the stage.
I saw Nina in 1999 in Brighton. The sound was dreadful but you could tell the performance was great. She came out dancing to a crowd that was going nuts over her and then she sat at the piano and waited for everyone to quiet down. she even leaned into the microphone and said,"I won't start playing until you calm down".

It was too funny.
Her stage stories are indeed wild. I pity for whoever heckles her because they will be chased down
I went to see her in 1999 as well with my mother(who is a great fan) in The Bitter End. She started singing "Black Is The Color of My True Love's Hair" when a couple were overheard talking during her set(a BIG no no) she locked the piano, got up, faced the couple and told them to "either shut the fuck up and listen or take your square asses home", the whole room gave an uproarious ovation I'll never forget that night.
It was the only time I saw her, and not much later I read she said that she'll never go back to the States again(which I learned later that she has always said this).

I forgot to add the rest of Millie's story.
Millie said she was friends with her and one day, she invited her to one of her shows. Millie said that they were having a party backstage for the crew and Nina was also invited. She said Nina showed up and sat at the table with everyone. Then she noticed that Millie and her road manager were not there. When they arrived, Nina went up to Millie's road manager and asked why were all of those commoners at the same table. Nina then refused to share the table with them and left.
