Paul McCartney, 68, has got engaged to Nancy Shevell, his girlfriend of nearly four years, his publicist said today. Shevell, 51, is a New York businesswoman and philanthropist.

The publicist said recent media speculation over a proposal is true but declined to give further details on when and how the former Beatle asked his girlfriend to marry him, saying only "We're all thrilled for him."

The marriage will be Sir Paul's third. His first wife, Linda, died of cancer in 1998 and the musician divorced his second wife, Heather Mills, in 2008 after a separation period.

Sir Paul and Ms Shevell started seeing each other in Long Island's Hamptons area in late 2007.

yeah it's easy for us to say he is stupid, but when you have a billion dollars you can be a little careless in the name of love.

I did not even know he had a girlfriend, though. At least this one does not look like a young model version of Linda. Clearly he was not well when he met Heather. He was still devastated

Linda died 13 years ago. And although the marriage to Mills was a personal disaster, he decidedly doesn't want to be consigned to a dreary, lonely life. The good news is his children have embraced her and want to see him happy.

^^ That's a good news aww hope he's happy with the new girl. Everyone hates Heather Mills and when they got to ugly divorce settlement, people went "Oh I totally saw it coming" as if they knew she was a gold digger from the beginning but I had looked up to her very much before the divorce battle thing began...

Sir Paul McCartney's bride-to-be is an expert in transportation.

While the singer, 68, and businesswoman Nancy Shevell, 51, have been dating for years, his lady love has kept a pretty low profile when it comes to celeb tabloids.

But she has made a name for herself in the transportation industry.

She is VP -- Administration of New England Motor Freight Inc. and the Shevell Group of Companies. She is in charge of "accounts receivable, corporate communications, benefits administration, purchasing of all supplies and equipment – with the exception of trucks – and overall office management."

Shevell also is active in the world of charitable organizations and is co-chair of the Arlene Walters Shevell Endowment Scholarship Fund, a family foundation which assists groups for parents of addicted children and offers financial support for individuals in accredited rehab programs.

She was appointed Chairperson of the Capital Construction Committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 2004. She was named to the MTA board in 2001 by former New York Gov. George Pataki.

Shevell holds a business degree in -- what else? -- transportation from Arizona State University.

Exactly. Linda was his soulmate...I guess now he's in search of another "Linda" but he won't find her. Otherwise he can't be lonely. Most men are like that, but he's at an advantage because of that big bank account...he doesn't have a problem finding some woman who wants to marry a billionare.
