Yeah musically Chaka delivers. I still love listening to Patti when she's mid-range but when she goes to church I skip it lol oddly enough her material with Labelle was more listenable plus she kept things sexy during the Labelle years.

Patti's still very entertaining as a live performer though. lol

We all know how much you love the song "Isn't It A Shame" biggrin

Whats not to love about that song? mushy

Speaking of Patti, and this is directed to her fans, would you consider Laura Nyro's "Its Gonna Take A Miracle" a LaBelle album? They're ALL over the album's background credit.

Way to turn a music opinion thread into a bait one. Nothing like injecting racial unwarranted bullshit where it has no place.Congratulations.

Someone either likes how someone sings or they don't. There is no rule that says you must only post about artists you love and who's ass you wanna blow air up.

This was a BAIT THREAD from the beginning. Just look at the topic:

"Who's most overrated..." That infers that there is an understood presuption by all they are both overrated. Don't try to strawman this into something that even a 5th grader could understand and comprehend. That type of hypocrisy is flat out insulting to EVERYONE'S intelligence. Whats more, it really shows the disingenuousness of all those participating in such a charade. Patti and Chaka both came up in a time where there was still much cultural segregation and their singing styles are both very heavily influenced from and by the BLACK churches, so that politically correct b.s. doesn't fly when telling the TRUTH. Nobody is saying anyone has to like Patti or Chaka. Its your choice.

BUT...

This mutha comes in here all arrogant like they AREN'T world renowned R&B singers, talking about "If you had to put up with eithers voice on a daily basis, who would you choose", so YEAH, he gets met with some static. Both y'all can GTFOH with that Simon Cowell B.S. because their fan base doesn't give two flying fucks about what some jackass who has no respect for their style of singing or seemingly no knowledge and understanding of its origins or roots has to say about them. Yeah, its cool to have an opinion - but at least have more of a BASIS to strike up a debate than an overdeveloped sense of self-importance and a narcissistic view of your own opinion. Some folks don't give a fuck what y'all think about that style of singing, so while insulting a couple of the queens of it may give you two some sense of self satisfaction, know that it is not shared by everyone, so deal with that.

1) No need to come at me with GTFOH's or 5-year-old references. I don't know a lot of mature grown ass folk who get all bent out of shape and on the defense when someone doesn't like the same singers as them, but I do know that 5 year olds like to throw fits over the silliest of shit.

2) I happen to be a huge Chaka fan. I like Patti alright, just not as big a fan as I am Chaka's. So I don't get why ur coming at me like I'm trashing anyone anyway.

3) It is plain arrogant to assume that folk who don't like the same things you do must not "get" them.

4) If this is a BAIT thread, then why not skip it? If it is (which I really don't feel it is), then ur biting and hard.

When are we gonna have a moment when people are not questioned for their taste in music because someone thinks two popular singers are overrated??? confused

I partially can see where the OP was going with this, no need to get bent out of shape over it. neutral

Too late. I think we're all here because we're "bent out of shape" - we don't quite "fit" anywhere.... Or is it just me eek (DON'T ANSWER THAT)........

To answer the ops question - I like both artists - neither are overrated imo.

1. That is a FLAT OUT LIE. You are a liar. It is not about not liking the same singers and you KNOW IT and you will be continuously be met with disrespect over it if you keep trying to perpetuate that same LIE. I stated what it was about and you are continuing on this course. There is nothing more pathetic than someone who chooses to deliberately ignore what was said in order to press an issue that was not stated.

"More overrated: Patti LaBelle or Chaka Khan" - how is this not presumptuous?

"If you had to put up with eithers voice on a daily basis, who would you choose?" Again, like this is "common knowledge and agreed to by all".

"I hate singers who are always over doing it, which is why I chose these two."

Overdoing it HOW? By singing faithfully to their cultural upbringing?

Fuck it. You wanna play dumb, go right ahead. Just stop lying. Its a deeper insult but go ahead and pretend that its not.

4. Its a DISCUSSION BOARD. I don't have to skip it. When someone starts an obvious hate bait thread, its idiotic not to expect to be met with some opposition. If you can't take it, don't dish it out.

Dude, one question....DO YOU THINK YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN TYPE IN BOLD BLACK TEXT? YOU MUST NEED ATTENTION TO TYPE OUT EVERYTHING LIKE THIS, DAMN! Anyway, this has gone on long enough. You're the only one going this hard over this thread [pretty much everybody else kindly disagreed with me], so that's it. Neither is overrated. Now You can go on living your life now. I gracefully bow out of defending my statement any further....

They're both underrated in certain aspects in their day. But they're both overrated to a large degree at this point. But that was bound to happen. They're two of the best of the very few female stars of a very B and C-list era for their genre.

Let me ask you this [since you gave your honest OPINION], Do you look at this thread as a "bait thread" or as an "Opinion Thread"? I'm becoming more & more confused by this....

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it one way or the other. People who want to participate will, whether they think it's bait or a chance to give an opinion, because they have nothing else better to do at that moment that they click on it. shrug

eek

I swear to fuckin Jimminy Cricket this place (and I do love it) is sometimes like:

Now I'm a LIAR?? falloff

I would ask how stating what I think is a lie, or better yet, how it is that you can psychically get inside my head to determine that what I'm saying is not what I believe but Dude, you know what, I disengage with you on this subject this very minute. Cause you're either nuts or some crybaby who must have by all means necessary the last shout, so have at it, shout it from the hilltops and feel like you've brought down some sort of...um, agenda. confused

I stand by what I said. It is my opinion that this thread is nothing but that, an opinion thread and folk are gonna have different ones. I've never even thought of the term "over-sing" as trashing someone's culture...a lot of people (different colors/cultures/musical backgrounds) "over-sing". This is also something completely based on personal likings. I just can't imagine investing this much energy on someone not liking the same music as me...even (and that's like a way way out there even) if it was some sort of...um..hate agenda.

If this is indeed a BAIT thread...still biting so so very hard.

In addition, for those of you trashing Patti you need to go back and listen to the Labelle records. The vocals those four woman had were incredible and if you have not taken the time to listen to the young Patti you really need to stop with the comments.

But it must be said, what the fuck? You play with fire you might just get burned. Patti and Chaka are clearly beloved by many - and that means that there are going to be people here who react poorly to your tactless and dense thread title. Once again, you're pre-judging! You don't know me at all, yet you claim I don't know about "my culture"? Getthefuckouttahere! It's stuff like that makes me see why we can't come together as people. So you like EVERY black artist huh. My whole point is this: I very much so respect what they have done as artist & I do think they ARE underrated [as in terms of sales & popularity], but I also think they're overrated as singers. It's my opinion! I never called then anything other than overrated singers. I don't decide what anybody listens to & I doubt I'm going to change anybody's mind about them with my opinion. LayDownMisty

here is my opinion (after all, that is what kind of thread it is)

after watching Chaka perform at 3121 Vegas, she did not sing..........she yelled

she also had 3 great back up singers that sung louder than she did

now, maybe she is older now and can't sing like she used to but I was not impressed at all and actually waited outside the venue until she was done yelling into the mic

here is a question though.......which one wrote more songs? I mean, we all know who wrote "Feel 4 U"

no doubt they are legends but I don't feel like I respect that kind of music enough to know if they are overrated

I do know that if you take a look at the first 4 or 5 pages in this forum, you will see what kind of music is more popular here and for me....it may as well be like walking into a country music forum

that being said, if you go into a country music forum and start a thread 'More overrated: Mel Tillis or Boxcar Willie" you might make some folks angry

and I have seen more racist bullshit here on the org than any other forum - and it is usually against white people

kinda funny that you are black and people thought you were white just because you started this topic

actually, it is kinda sad and pathetic............but hey, this place has more MJ fans than Prince fans so what does that tell you?

Prince - not black, not white........just COOL

this thread should teach you a lesson. Don't pick on Chaka or Patti lol lol

lol The only lesson this thread taught me was how racist people are. I should do another one with "other artist you can't say anything bad about" & see what happens. All of this over an opinion? I see why this world is the way it is....

if you are black you should already know how racist people. lol it doesn't take the prince org

but i don't think anything racist was going on in this thread, i just think people are protective of chaka and patti thats all. They really got some serious fans lol

Kind of. Patti's hard to ignore, as are Sarah and Nona, they're almost as up front as Laura at some points on the record plus the album credit definitely gives away the fact that it's considered a "Labelle album".
