I don't think either of them are overrated. They are extremely gifted vocalists who bring great emotion to their music and they are a joy to watch on stage. They conduct themselves like true grown ups during interviews and Patti is a half-way decent actress.

When I think of overrated musical performers I think of:

Tony Bennet

Brittney Spears

Barbara Streisand

Diana Ross

Pussycat Dolls

Tom Jones

The Beatles

Pink

and a host of others who are not so much popular because their music & vocals are so breath taking but because they came along at the right time and had an image that others wanted to emulate. They were extremely marketable but not necessarily talented.

It's still not a bait thread! Look at all of the other threads I've started, I just think like this. I don't agree with every thread I see, but I don't refer to them as "BAIT Threads"! It is some really sensitive people on Prince.org I see......

I don't know how either is rated but I'll take Chaka anyday. Patti's voice annoys me and the only singer that goes through more needless runs-- hey everybody see how great I can sang-- is Christina Aguilera. My favorite singer is Stephanie Mills with Deniece Williams a close second, but Chaka is definitely up there.

Thanks for your opinion. Slowly but surely, I'm coming around to liking Chaka more & more to be honest. Maybe it depends on my mood while listening. Patti is STILL outta the question though.....

I don't think either lady is overrated.They both deserve their legendary status in R&B.They're two of the most amazing vocalists ever!

First off, it really doesn't matter what race or heritage you are. I'm Puerto Rican, if someone says they don't like Salsa music I'm not gonna get all up in arms and HOW DARE YOU and you ain't Latino so you don't know and your opinion is pointless...pointless?? really???...what sounds good to their ears or their musical taste have no bearing on my cultural pride so why would I feel motivated to pick this kind of thing to make such dismissive statements over (talk about baiting)?

Secondly, you can listen to Patti with Labelle all damn day and all damn night, and you might LOVE it (hey, you might hate it too), but either won't make you suddenly be a fan of her newer material if you already don't care for it.

Don't try to strawman this into something that even a 5th grader could understand and comprehend. That type of hypocrisy is flat out insulting to EVERYONE'S intelligence. Whats more, it really shows the disingenuousness of all those participating in such a charade. Patti and Chaka both came up in a time where there was still much cultural segregation and their singing styles are both very heavily influenced from and by the BLACK churches, so that politically correct b.s. doesn't fly when telling the TRUTH. Nobody is saying anyone has to like Patti or Chaka. Its your choice.

After hearing everybody else's opinion on this matter, I actually feel different & regret even starting this thread in this manner. I'm not a fan of these two, but at the same time I SHOULD have thought about re-phrasing this whole thing. Anyone on this forum could say "more overrated" about a number of artist, But would you still make a big deal of it like this? I make music myself & I already know everybody is not going to like what I do, but I respect all opinions. They're both underrated in certain aspects in their day. But they're both overrated to a large degree at this point. But that was bound to happen. They're two of the best of the very few female stars of a very B and C-list era for their genre.
