I've never been a fan of either [Though I do really like what Chaka Kahn did with "Rufus", I don't care at all for anything she did afterwords. The only Patti LaBelle songs I like are "On My Own" with Michael McDonald & "Somebody Loves You"]. I think both are actually kind of annoying. If you had to put up with eithers voice on a daily basis, who would you choose?

why even make this thread. and for your information Chaka Khan is not overrated. I WISH she was.

i don't care if you find them annoying, especially chaka, its like 2011 you dont have to listen to their songs unless you personally look them out on youtube or something....

and i would love to sing like chaka khan any day.

mad

Someone else who didn't read through all of the comments!!! Thanks for your comment though....

I Think Chaka's best output has been after Rufus (the album Chaka and What cha gonna do for me), also Chaka Khan can't be overrated she beats any soul singer i've heard.

Patti is more overrated. She's got the power in her voice and performances, but she's been given loads of weak material and songs to sing through the years. Chaka had GREAT songs with Rufus, and after that some of them weren't bad at all, although i'm not a fan of her cheesy 80's stuff. Ah, i almost forgot: Chaka is more versatile as a vocalist too.

I agree with your assessment almost 100%. I actually prefer Chaka solo material over the Rufus stuff. IMO, Chaka has a more solid body of work. I love Patti but I can not say that she has recorded an entire album that I enjoyed. I find myself constantly hitting the "skip" button thru all of her albums. However, although neither are over-rated, Patti has been given more props in the black community than Chaka has. And I realize the fact that Patti has a reputation for being more "entertaining" and consistant as a live performer has a lot to do with it.

And there you have the reason why Patti gets the props she does. She gets some respect for her work in the studio (though most of her albums after 1986 were skip heavy) but her live performances were what made her a legend IMHO.

Patricia Louise Holt, period! Yvette Marie Stevens is a far better singer.

I have never heard Miss Holt do a run or riff, she just screams and usually will bend sharp. Miss Stevens cna go off pitch too, but her vocal versatility trumps LaBelle's screaming minnie arse anyday.

Baloney.

Chaka has never outsung Patti. EVER.

Yes, she has!

Patti "Screaming" Labelle could never come for Chaka's vocals. NEVER.

When it comes to vocal versatility? Chaka > Patti.

When it comes to live performances? Patti > Chaka.

Fact. lol

When it comes to screaming...PATTI! falloff

Come on I love Patti like a play mother but she can scream to the top of the sycamore trees! spit

Fantasia's trying to do this shit right now. lol

It's interesting as Patti is getting older, she still tries to do the ad-libs but she's lost a bit of her vocal power so she has to resort to using falsetto now. But maybe that's a sign of getting older. She'll be 67 on May 24.

Oh and when it comes to doing Aretha right:

Chaka > Patti.

Aretha always " biggrin " whenever Chaka does a cover of one of her songs like "Baby I Love You".

Aretha was like " lurking " when Patti did "Ain't No Way"...twice in front of her. lol

Be that as it may we still gotta give her credit for her longevity. She's held up better than Aretha and maybe even Gladys.

That's true but I do think it's catching up to her now. She had to wait until 60 for her voice to weaken.

Is that why you made this hate bait thread? Both of them are great vocalists.

Who made up the term "oversinging"? I bet they weren't black and didn't grow up in Baptist churches. So now we're putting limits on peoples' abilities because other people are mediocre and need to feel better about themselves? Is that the game? Both of these women know who they are and what they contributed to BLACK music, so its cool if you can't "put up" with them because there are many who can and would love to.

Someone just happened to bring up Patti talking about Prince hence why he was inspired to do this lol

Like I said they're not overrated in a technical sense.

The Compromise Theory:
Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives.
The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists.
Is it a deal?

That's what I'm talking about. If you are not into true Soul/R&B singing, then you're not going to like Chaka and Patti. It's sad that people like Beyonce and Rhianna are being called R&B, with their Soul-less music, when they are really Dance-Pop singers. R&B has lost it's true meaning and it's roots within the last 15 to 20 years.

What a ridiculous thread this is. No one can seriously say Chaka is overrated, she is one of the best singers ever IMO, who can do pop, jazz, funk, r&b, rock, soul... Just listen to her do "A Night In Tunesia" or youtube "Goin' Up Yonder" she sang at a funeral and tell me how that is in any way overrated? True, she has recorded some duds in her career, but that does not an overrated singer make, beause no singer records classic songs all the time.

Personally I am more of a fan of Chaka's than Patti, because of the histrionics indeed, but that does not take away from the fact that she is a very talented singer who has been around forever for a reason!

this! there is no way chaka has ever been overrated. i do get annoyed with patti's screaming but i wouldnt call her overrated either.now if you wanna talk about overrated my numeral uno is ARETHA FRANKLIN
