Close, but no cigar! Songs that were ALMOST a #1 hit, but peaked at #2 instead

(Held Back by Kriss Kross "Jump" in 1992) En Vogue has a couple #2's actually lol. (Which isn't a bad thing of course)

(Held back by Paula Abdul "Forever Your Girl" in 1989)

(Held back by Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men "One Sweet Day in 1996)

(Held back by Phil Collins "Another Day In Paradise" in Dec 1989/Jan 1990)

Add on. I know a few others, but I'm sure there many other big hit singles that fought their way towards #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, only to be denied by an even bigger hit.

Several singles by Creedence Clearwater Revival. They never had a #1 in the US.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Roxette had two singles that both peaked at #2 in the U.S. following #1 singles. "Dangerous" was preceded by "Listen To Your Heart" which went all the way to the top spot. Then history repeated itself when "Fading Like a Flower" peaked at #2 after the lead single "Joyride" took the number one slot.

This song spent ten consecutive weeks at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981-1982, just behind Olivia Newton-John's "Physical", which spent ten consecutive weeks at number one.

Yep. This same song that many orgers say ripped Midnight Star's No Parking on The

Dance Floor. biggrin Peaked at #2 r&b in 1984 held back by Deniece Williams Let's Hear It

For the Boy. Like i stated many times no matter the similarity to No Parking On The Dance

Floor, Freakshow still moved the crowd and a lot even dug Freakshow better.

Wow! Never noticed that Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" peaked at #2. I always though that was a #1 hit. I guess you learn something new everyday.

(Held back by Club Nouveau "Lean On Me" in 1987)

(Held back by Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" in fall of 1985)

(Held back by Janet Jackson "All For You" in 2001)

(Held back by Toni Braxton "Unbreak My Heeart" in Jan/Feb of 1997)

A few on the Billboard R&B charts....

(Argubly my fav R&B single from the 1990's. Peaked at #2 behind "R Kelly's Bump 'N Grind" on the R&B charts in the spring of 1994)

(Also held back by R Kelly's "Bump 'N Grind" on the R&B charts in the spring of 1994)

One of the MOST famous #2's was LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live". While it didn't reach the top spot, it still was one of the top 5 biggest singles of 1997. I think it was the second biggest single of the year but my memory's blurry on that fact.

The Compromise Theory:
Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives.
The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists.
Is it a deal?

Prince's "U Got The Look" peaked at Number Two on the pop charts in September 1987.

The song that kept it out of the top spot? "Lost In Emotion" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.
