Mayer Hawthorne releases a covers EP---download it for free

Exclusive: Download Neo-Soul Singer Mayer Hawthorne's New Covers EP

Free download includes songs by Electric Light Orchestra, Isley Brothers and Chromeo

Click to listen to Mayer Hawthorne's new EP, 'Impressions"

Mayer Hawthorne's Impressions EP finds the Los Angeles singer and producer putting his own spin on classic tunes by Electric Light Orchestra and the Isley Brothers as well selections by contemporary acts like Chromeo and Jon Brion. Hawthorne's production style is slick and meticulous, calling back to the rich, elegant sound of early Seventies tracks by Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes while including subtle modern touches. Though his takes on ELO's cheery hit "Mr. Blue Sky" and the obscure soul single "You've Got the Makings of a Lover" are remarkably faithful, it's most thrilling to hear Hawthorne reimagine "Don't Turn the Lights On," a recent track by the Montreal electro duo Chromeo, as an orchestral soul slow jam.

Loved his debut release, A Strange Arrangement from 2009. Shame it didn't get love from mainstream, but he has a loyal following. I guess I'll check this EP of covers out.

I finally brought the physical CD of A Strange Arrangement from Best Buy last Saturday, after owning the MP3 version for 2 years and I was surprised as it was only $5 bucks. I recommend that people buy the CD version instead of the MP3 version because it has that warm analog sound that recalls a great sounding old vinyl record from the 60s and 70s. The package is nice too, with the elegant pictures of ladies. And the music...excellent! Nuff said. music

I just listened to the album (Strange Arrangement that is). I love it. biggrin I already loved the track you posted, Soul, and the title track, but the entire album's stellar, definitely strong on a Motown/'60s pop in general tip...

the title track should have been a major hit. It's a great tune that was featured in a major motion picture ('Why Did I Get Married Too').Just needed more promotion and airplay.

MAYER HAWTHORNE Signs to Universal Republic Records

Sophomore Album HOW DO YOU DO in Stores Due This Fall

NEW YORK--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC RECORDS excitedly declares the signing of alternative soul impresario and critical darling, MAYER HAWTHORNE. His full-length debut for the label, HOW DO YOU DO, will hit shelves and digital retailers this fall, and the buzz single "A Long Time," will be released digitally on May 24th.

“2009 issue, and he was also chosen as one of Playboy's breakout artists of 2009.”

Listeners will be introduced to HAWTHORNE via the intoxicating and seductive sounds of "A Long Time." The singer's voice instantly transports listeners back to the golden age of soul but with a slick modern kick. He's got a refined, timeless style reminiscent of Smoky Robinson and Curtis Mayfield mixed with a forward-thinking sound.

The Ann Arbor, MI native released his self-produced independent debut, A Strange Arrangement, in 2009. A limited-edition 7" heart-shaped vinyl of the single "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out"/"When I Say Goodbye" was pressed and –combined with the traditional digital single— exceeded sales of 50,000 copies while critics everywhere began embracing his unique flavor and flare. MAYER HAWTHORNE’s stellar debut was included in Entertainment Weekly's "Best-Of" 2009 issue, and he was also chosen as one of Playboy's breakout artists of 2009.

Now, anticipation continues to mount for HOW DO YOU DO as tastemakers, celebrities, and fans alike unanimously sing HAWTHORNE's praises.

Rolling Stone wrote, "Hawthorne emerges with a jaw-dropping collection of classic soul," while Perez Hilton couldn't contain his excitement exclaiming, "We love, love, love it." Other acclaim has come from Spin.com, Esquire.com, Detroit Free Press, and Exclaim! He's also Snoop Dogg's "favorite new artist", and Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and John Mayer have all taken to Twitter to proclaim their adoration.

MAYER HAWTHORNE hit the road this spring with Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae with a performance at Lollapalooza 2011 planned for August. His live show has already won the hearts of audiences everywhere including famed festivals such as, SXSW, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits, and more.

With HOW DO YOU DO set for release, HAWTHORNE is about to give the 21st century some real soul.
