X-Ray Spex Singer Poly Styrene Dies At 53

April 26, 2011

Poly Styrene, energetic singer with 1970s punk band X-Ray Spex, has died at 53.

Styrene, whose real name was Marion Elliott-Said, had been suffering from cancer.

A statement on her official Twitter feed said Tuesday that "the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places."

The BBC and other outlets also reported the death.

The band released just one album, 1978's Germ Free Adolescents, but its aggressively catchy single "Oh Bondage, Up Yours!" became an enduring punk anthem.

Styrene later joined the Hare Krishna movement and released several solo albums. She once said she would like to be remembered for something spiritual, but "I know I'll probably be remembered for 'Oh Bondage, Up Yours!'"

Terrible news. So young! I really liked her voice and she was pretty too.

My X-Ray song of choice is 'Cigarettes' - very catchy

She'd only recently released a new solo album, Generation Indigo.

Oh My God! That is sad. She was so young. I just recently have being obsessing over their music thanks to Timmy84, and only got Let's Submerge like 2 months ago maybe cause our local indie music store randomly started stocking it.

sad I wish she had released more music, but more importanly I pray she's at peace now

If you will, so will I

Less than 3 months ago she revealed that she'd been diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, due to the aggressive nature of her disease, medical treatment couldn't save her. Life is very brief, afterall.

Rest in peace, Poly. I just discovered this lady and the great contribution she had in the development of punk and new wave. May she rest eternally. Sad day. wilted

It really bugs me when good people like Poly & Pheobe Snow pass away too early and human turds like Charlie Manson are still around. The Universe can be quite funny.

Tell me about it. Joey Ramone was only 49 when he died, I don't think the other Ramones who passed away weren't even 60 yet. Johnny Thunders died at 38. Of course we know what happened to Sid. Wendy O. Williams died tragically at a young age. It's kinda like hip-hop artists and Motown artists, they all seem to die at very young ages. Joe Strummer wasn't 50 when he died.

Punk rock doesn't have a good pension plan. Some like Thunders were killing themselves. But Strummer was supposedly fairly healthy but had a congenital defect he never knew about. A lot of those guys died from not having access to health care... Stiv Bators was hit by a car & didn't think it was worthwhile to go to the hospital and get checked out, died of internal injuries that night.

RIP Poly, you were no poseur.

You know when I did begin hearing X Ray Spex this year (yeah I know very late in the game), I heard a very revolutionary sound from them and Poly definitely was a revolutionary looking back. She never got the credit she deserved - then again most pioneers don't.
