The beatles - John or Paul? Who did you prefer overall solo etc..?

I dig em both...for different reasons.
Loved Wings, but Paul never did anything near as good as "Plastic Ono Band"--so good it's ridiculous. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

George. TBH. | |

Hard to compare them. Even if you just compare up to 1980 John's body of work was only about half as big as Paul's. For me Plastic Ono Band and Imagine are much better than anything Paul did but John released some average albums too.
I tend to favour John as I find Paul too schmaltzy, especially on his own.

Please. Nobody liked George's solo work.

Something about those songs on "These Things Must Pass"... I don't know... I like Paul and John too.
He's the only solo Beatle not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

TBDH, neither.
Even if you throw George AND Ringo into the discussion, I still vote neither.
The more I listen to each of The Fab Four's solo efforts in recent years, the more I can't help but to admit that all 4 men needed each other more then any of them were willing to admit.

Wings
That wouldn't be a solo project though, would it?

if the beatles had a saxophone it it, i may actually like them. i liked how they did it in that clip. they made the songs sound cool!

I dock the album at least a star and a half for the last two sides of aimless instrumental wankery.
It's funny with George, he started very strongly with All Things Must Pass and Living in the Material World but after that he was much more miss than hit.

I would too if the rest of it weren't so brilliant. I think it blows Plastic Ono Band out of the water in every other respect.
True that. Living in the Material World is also great. My favorite solo albums by a Beatle:
1. All Things Must Pass 2. Plastic Ono Band 3. Living in the Material World 4. Band on the Run (if that counts) "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Paul.
I'm a huge fan of Paul's work with Wings.I love songs like "Band On The Run","Jet","Goodnight Tonight",etc.

John.
I prefer his Beatles stuff, too. Well, that's not entirely true. I prefer when they sang on tracks together (like "A Day In the Life," etc.), but I really like John's songs more overall. He was such an amazing lyricist. "Across The Universe" is beautiful.
That said, "Hey Jude" and "For No One" are in my top ten Beatles songs.
As for post-Beatles stuff, John by a mile. [Edited 4/22/11 4:40am] [Edited 4/22/11 4:40am] "She made me glad to be a man"

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Definitely agree. It kind of stinks that there are basically no rock bands today that have 2-3 great vocalists that sing together. Songs like "This Boy" and "Yes It Is" sound very pretty.

Lennon's songs were more sophisticated and usually more interesting. McCartney was the better musician and the more versatile one as a writer.
In the end, I prolly prefer John's stuff.

In this case and IMO, the Whole was much better than the sum of its parts--I still love the Beatles stuff , along with George Martin's production much more than anything any of them did on their own--- Although I do like PlasticOno Band and Band on the Run....
But actually, for solo stuff I think I'm more a McCartney Fan (I know I'm dodging bricks now ) because I never heard solo Lennon pull off something this inside- funky, :

Definately Paul. John ain't never made a jam like "Don't Say Goodnight". Andy is a four letter word.

True, both approaches have their strengths....

Ndeed! But then , to be fair--The Groove--That just wasn't John's thing--he would never even want to do something like that--- but McCartney would lay down a groove in a minute...
