Actually, "You Gotta Be" is Des'Ree, but she's awesome too. I love her song "Feel So High".

kinda surprised Spinlight confused Dionne Farris & Des'ree.

Wildseed Wildflower is a great album overall. i need to go find Dionne's indie releases she released afterward. i love her. Feel So High by Des'ree is on one of my mix tapes. Her duet with TTD, Delicate is sublime!

Both of these women deserved more visibility and longevity.

lol, I added the wink after the fact to make sure people got that I was joking. "You Gotta Be" and "I Know" are 2 of my favorite songs - but they are the ONLY songs I know by both ladies and the two of them seem kind of interchangeable to me (kind of like Hillary Duff and Kelly Clarkson).

biggrin Randy "Dawg" Jackson was her co-producer for Wild Seed Wild Flower, in his Pre "A.I. " days--He went on to manage Van Hunt, who was Dionne's second guitarist and Keyboardist back then....

wow, learn something new everyday. guess i WOULDN'T know those things about Randy Jackson as I've never watched AI, but i guess he's not a "scrub" off the street. (not that i THOUGHT he was...) LOL. but someone with lots of industry experience. Too bad he couldn't help Dionne & Van Hunt's careers thrive better.

btw, Dionne Farris and Des'ree are NOT interchangeable. Hillary Duff & Kelly Clarkson probably (and we could add several more to that list) but not these two

Des'Ree is British, had a more feminie appearance and style and often sang with her hands. "You Gotta Be" is a great, uplifting song, but when I watch the video I can't help but LOL at the posing and hand gestures she makes.

Dionne rocked the bald look well, but these days she's let her hair grow out and is looking decidedly less...shall we say...butch...

^ Interesting about Dionne but I would've thought she'd grown her hair again at some point.

I love Feel So High! It's her best song but it was a huge flop in the US (like so many other singles that follow huge hits).

I actually like "Feel So High" better than "You Gotta Be". I remember she sued Janet back when "Got 'til It's Gone" first came out, claiming GTIG sampled FSH without her permission. She eventually won royalties, a co-writing credit and her name was featured on further pressings of the single. She also sued Beyonce a while back over her song "Kissing You" (another beautiful track).

wow, Des'ree sued Janet and won huh. i'll have to listen closer to GTIG to see if i can hear the sample.

I hope Dionne is NOT a carpet muncher, all shaved head black women aren't.

What a song!!! This is the scene I was into in '95--the black alternative, Rock/R&B/whatever hybrid. I tried so hard to be part of Dionne Farris's click at the time. I dreamed of being one of her guitarist...

I liked Des'ree too... Don't find them similar at all except that their two big hits were like 'songs of the year' for me.

I bet that Des'ree/Seal tour was something... Hate I missed it.

Man how I love Dionne's first album. Great stuff. I know she made a second album and I'm embarrassed to admit I don't have it nor have I heard it. Anyone heard it? If so, how is it? I need to track it down.

wink
