MJ's Invincible - is it any good?

Yes, it's another MJ topic! I'm starting to think we should all go and post about Prince on http://www.mjjforum.com just to even things out.

But back to my question - Invincible, is it any good? I just bought the special editions of Off the Wall and Thriller the other day, which I love, and I'm considering buying the rest of his albums on CD.

I have heard all his others except Invincible, because I have them on tape.

So, give me a rough idea. How does it rate with his others?

Essence

The first seven tracks are good, as is "Whatever Happens". That's half the album, the other eight vary between poor and average IMO.

I agree with Essence. Half of it is good.

It seems like that for every good song, there's a subpar twin song that might be decent itself, but doesn't measure up to the other one that sounds exactly like it.

I Agree. His Vocals truly are tight on the Album but the Instrumentation seems to thin to vibe with His Voice for my tastes.also the Up-Tempo Tracks aside from "Unbreakable" were kinda flat for Me.but His Slow Jams are Cooking IMHO.better than most of the stuff out now easily but coming from MJ some of it He could have done in His Sleep IMHO.

Essence hit it right on the head. I feel that makes it a very good album however. 8 good tracks make it a worth while buy.

My opinion:

Unbreakable - great stuff
Heartbreaker - so-so
Invincible - funky
Break of Dawn - perfection
Heaven Can Wait - perfection
You Rock Mah Wooorrrld - I thought I'd get tired of it, but it's still hot.
Butterflies - 'nuff said
Speechless - cheesy, but pretty melody
2000 Watts - interesting
Privacy - blah
You Are My Life - cheese
Don't Walk Away -this is my song. She's Out Of My Life Pt. 2
Cry - trite crap.
The Lost Children - an MJ song. Is it my thing? No. But I can appreciate it for what it's worth.
Whatever Happens - perfection
Threatened - I think it's cheese, but many people dig.

It's nice to see people giving props for "Don't Walk Away". That's a really underrated track, and a strong emotional ballad. The slow songs on this whole CD are really strong, minus the Lost Children...

Cry and The Lost Children are the only two I'm not fond of.
I burned my own version and replaced them with Shout and Xscape.

that song only works for me on Cloudy Cold Days or when I think of a Soundtrack.I Like the Vocals but that's about it when the Weather is Warm.

Pepina, that's an interesting review.I like what you wrote about "The Lost Children".It's not one of the best songs on the album, but I appreciate the sincerity of it all.

That's a cool review, Pepina and I agree with it pretty much completely. Since starting this thread I have bought all of MJ's back catalogue and I'm loving rediscovering ALL of it (except for Invincible which I hadn't heard before and am digging, too).

As others on this thread have pointed out,the best thing about 'Invincible' are the slower tracks.

I consider "Butterflies","Heaven Can Wait","Break Of Dawn","Cry","Speechless"and "Whatever Happens" to be MJ's best work since the 'OTW' album.

omg

Woah, that's a tough call!

I can't agree with you on that one, sir!

What about the whole of the Dangerous album?

He has done a LOT of great stuff since OTW... that's just to high a claim for me to agree with.

Oh,I like 'Dangerous' and the other albums. But the ballads on 'Invincible' are just so soulful and powerful. When I first played this CD,I nearly fainted when I heard "Heaven Can Wait".It was as if the 'Off The Wall' Michael was back! I went nuts!

IMO Invincible is a bad record. I have trouble listening it in one session. There's only a handful of good songs on it. This is his worst album ever...

You can get the original version of "Butterflies" by the writers of the song, on Floetry's Floetic album too.

I can't believe Heartbreaker has been described as so-so.
It's a real grower.

"Heartbreaker" sounds like N'Sync produced by Timbaland. It's a very generic song.

Well, I've never listened to N'Sync so I don't have those comparisons. Lucky me, eh?

it has that Sound but the direct link of "Heartbreaker" is the Timberland Produced "Pony" on Ginuwine from back in 96.that was the first thought that came to my mind when I heard "Heartbreaker".aside from "Unbreakable" I really wasn't feeling MJ's Up-tempo tracks on here that much.

I don't like that 2000 watts song too much. It doesn't even sound much like Michael - the voice is too low.

My favourite songs are "You Rock My World", "Unbreakable" and

"Whatever Happens" - love this song!
