Marvin's "What's Going On" Receives 40th Anniversary Treatment...

I don't know how many times this iconic, landmark album has been released, reissued, remastered, etc., but here comes another reissue:

From theseconddisc.com:

Smokey Robinson has called it “the greatest album of all time.” Rolling Stone ranked it in the Top Ten in its survey of the Greatest Albums of All Time, at No. 6. Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On broke the Motown mold as Gaye delivered one of the most personal albums of all time: impassioned, outraged, haunting, beautiful and altogether unexpected. That seminal LP was released on May 21, 1971 and has remained in print since. Ten years ago, for its thirtieth anniversary, Motown reissued What’s Going On as a two-disc Deluxe Edition, bolstering Disc 1 with a rhythm-and-strings mix of the title song and the album’s original, darker “Detroit Mix” as created by Steve Smith in April 1971. (The eventual mix was the work of Lawrence Miles in Los Angeles early in May.) The second disc featured a May 1, 1972 performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., reprising much of the album along with a lengthy ’60s medley, as well as three rare single versions and an early version of “Distant Lover,” developed more fully on Let’s Get It On.

Today, Motown/UMe has confirmed details for a major box set due on May 17 celebrating this classic album’s 40 years. What’s Going On – Super Deluxe Edition includes two CDs and one vinyl LP, 14 unreleased tracks and copious rarities, plus an oversized booklet with two essays and rare photos from the original cover shoot. The original album graphics have also been reproduced, as they were a landmark, too, showcasing lyrics and identifying musicians for the very first time at Motown. Disc 1 adds to the album several outtakes and demos from sessions leading up to the recording of What’s Going On as well as the A- and B-sides of the album’s three mono single releases. Disc 2 documents Gaye’s jams in the period immediately post-What’s Going On where he developed mostly instrumental ideas with young guitarists Ray Parker Jr. and Wah Wah Watson, and 20-year-old bassist Michael Henderson. Disc 2 is rounded out by Gaye’s final sessions in Detroit including the politically-oriented non-LP single “You’re the Man,” which went R&B Top 10 in Spring 1972. Also included are two alternate takes of the song. The LP will premiere the “Detroit Mix” on vinyl.

What’s Going On: Super-Deluxe Edition will arrive in stores on May 17. Hit the jump for Motown’s complete press release as well as the track listing with discographical information!

LOS ANGELES, April 11, 2011 – On May 21, 1971, Motown Records released an album unique to its vast, already classic catalog: a suite of protest songs, railing, albeit softly and with an undeniable groove, about the planet’s woes and the pain of war. With What’s Going On, Marvin Gaye forever changed the sound and subject matter of popular music, influencing and inspiring every generation since. Formerly Motown’s reigning smooth-faced, smiling, mass-appeal artist, this album was Gaye’s departure for the bearded, brooding, reflective, angry artist he would become. His first self-production, the album was written, sung and solely produced by Gaye.

Forty years on, the album remains a timeless classic. Speaking boldly and passionately about social issues on the street unlike any other album before, What’s Going On provided a soundtrack to life in America–and still does. It was a smash from the start and it’s still one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top ten Greatest Albums of All Time. Two songs from this album are in the Grammy Hall of Fame, which honors the most important recordings in history.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary, Motown/UMe proudly announces the release of What’s Going On – Super Deluxe Edition, on May 17, 2011. This new Super Deluxe Edition includes two CDs and one vinyl LP, 14 unreleased tracks, copious rarities, all complemented by an oversized booklet with two essays and rare photos from the original cover shoot. Inside as well is a reproduction of the album graphics, which showcased, for the first time at Motown, the song’s lyrics–and identified the musicians.

Leading off this lovingly produced, double-gatefold 12×12 package is a newly remastered version of the original album, which delivers a deeper, warmer sound than in previous reissues. Added to the album on Disc 1 are several outtakes from sessions that led up to the recording of the LP–the original mix of the title song Marvin presented to Motown’s legendary Quality Control meeting, where it was summarily rejected; and song demos which show Marvin wrestling with the rejection–as well as the album’s three mono single releases, each of which reached No. 1 R&B and Top 10 pop: “What’s Going On” (in a very different mix than the LP), “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” and “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler),” plus their B-sides, of which two are alternate takes from the familiar LP versions.

Disc 2 of What’s Going On – Super Deluxe Edition is a document of the album’s aftermath, when Marvin Gaye, reluctant to tour and shy about becoming the “spokesman of his generation,” holed up in Motown’s Studio B in Detroit with like-minded musicians–among them the young guitarists Ray Parker Jr. and Wah Wah Watson, and the 20-year-old bassist Michael Henderson, fresh from a Miles Davis tour–and simply jammed over several days. These tracks, mostly instrumental, are as brooding and funky as the What’s Going On album cover. The rest of the disc includes Gaye’s final sessions in Detroit; among the few tunes he recorded was a sequel of sorts to the album, the politically tinged non-LP single “You’re The Man,” which hit the R&B top 10 in spring 1972. Also included are two rare alternate takes of the song.

Capping this special release is the first ever 12-inch vinyl LP of the “Detroit Mix” of What’s Going On, the original, darker mix of the entire album, left behind when Gaye decided to finish the overdubs in Los Angeles.

Inside is an LP-sized booklet with rare photos from the sessions, the original lyrics, detailed recording annotations and two essays: one by Gaye biographer David Ritz describing the “Why” Marvin Gaye created his first-ever self-produced album, and another detailing the “How” by Ben Edmonds, author of What’s Going On: Marvin Gaye and The Last Days Of The Motown Sound.

Seems interesting...I guess I'll be shelling out $40 bucks for this again! Kinda pissed because the previous, 2001 deluxe edition was excellent.

The most interesting thing about this reissue is it seems that the producers of this set were leaning heavily on the 2001 deluxe edition of What's Going On to bring this set to fruition. Hmm...something is fishy about this set. But the selling point of this set is the previously unreleased post-What's Going On cuts and instrumentals of course. These record companies love to cash in stuff, I swear!

Yep. nod

Hate to do it, but there's no other choice really. I hope that the expanded edition of Trouble Man is still on the table like Harry Weigner said.

You're right. It would be redundant for there to be a 40th anniversary edition of Let's Get It On, in my opinion. The deluxe edition got everything right for that album. I just wish Motown would release a simple rarities box, instead of reissuing the same album over and over.

They really need to get Stevie's stuff in order because those 2000 reissues were near-horrendous, from a sound perspective. A deluxe version of Songs In The Key of Life and Innervisions would be cool, with SACD-quality remastering from Stevie's original tape masters.

Stevie's stubbornness and fear Motown may fuck up his albums are probably why he don't bother. Somehow they know the RIGHT time to put out Marvin gems I ain't ever heard of. lol Like I said in another thread a while back, Marvin might've recorded more stuff than what's been out. typing

Oh without a doubt...the vaults are full of Marvin's stuff. We still have the unfinished and unreleased You're the Man album, which we've already heard bits and pieces of throughout the years on various releases (particularly The Master (1961-1984) and Let's Get It On: Deluxe Edition). They are really prolific when it comes to Marvin and Diana stuff.

Oh and I definitely agree with you on Stevie. When he gave his tapes to the folks who worked on the 1993 MO-FI edition of Innervisions, he swore to never let anyone use his tapes again.

It seems with Stevie, they always fuck up. But Marvin and Diana/Supremes, they somehow ace it. Weird lol

And that version of Innervisions was the best version. It beat out the sound and warmth of vinyl and any other version. But his stubbornness and insecurity got in the way. I bet his tapes are all beat up and worn out anyway...lol

You got his Lost Starved Heart extended set? biggrin

Lots of great unearthed tracks. "Soulie" from the 1966 New York sessions (that also included a version of "My Girl" and "Sunny") was released on the digital-only "Then and Now" album. It was a nice little folksy song that he did real good on.

Yes that was one of his more memorable compilations, IMO. So many rarities on that collection that deserved to be released in some fashion back in the day.

Wow, another one indeed. But I think I'll pass.

The label is practically scraping the bottom of the barrel to come up with outtakes.

Got a Marvin Question...

I love tracks like 'Stranger In My Life', and 'Walking In Rain' .... but I was wondering if they've been released anywhere else besides the CBS CD 'Romantically Yours'. ....

I don't think they have. Both songs sound like they could've been Vulnerable tracks too.
