Ummm...ok that trailer was weird. In the beginning of that trailer, one could've played this off as a documentary that was getting a wide release from Paramount. Now that would be amazing more than a biopic. But Tichina Arnold would be a perfect Patti. Got the voice, charisma, and everything. That woman has had many career triumphs from Martin to Everybody Hates Chris. She would slam dunk that performance.

Beyonce as Diana Ross...nah!

Halle as Cindy Birdsong...nah!

Jennifer Hudson as Aretha...probably so, but would the acting be there? Everybody knows she won the Oscar gold for her show-stopping rendition of "I'm Telling You," but overall she overacted and played a loud mouthed witch.

That was wishful thinking on the creator's part. lol

Goodness knows I couldn't STAND that Dreamgirls movie. mad

Also Diana and Aretha only played BIT roles in Patti's life story. As far as I know Diana and Patti get along now (there was a photo of them holding each other's hands at some event and Diana was sans makeup) and Patti & Aretha respect each other (even with the rumored quote about Patti knowing that Ree Ree had "PC").

To be honest, the film on Patti - if it's ever made - will be about:

  • Her mixed-up childhood (her parents had a violent relationship, she was sexually molested, she was shy, singing gave her confidence)
  • How the Bluebelles got started
  • The rise to the top (including the bumps along the way)
  • The transformation of the Bluebelles to Labelle and their dramatic breakup
  • Patti seeing a shrink after the breakup to figure out why she and her husband weren't getting along only to realize a lot of issues had affected her during the Labelle run (postpartum depression after Zuri's birth, the success of "Marmalade" and the struggle to keep up with demands)
  • Patti going on to a successful solo career but struggling with the deaths of her sisters at young ages and her bout with diabetes

I'm guessing the earlier years will probably be the MAIN focus of the film though...much like Tina Turner and Aretha's (if that one finally gets out).

Yep, I agree with every point Timmy! Patti's life has just been filled with so many glorious moments and drama that a 2-hour movie will be able to convey. I was watching her Biography special from the late 90s the other day and it was heartbreaking for me. The fact that Patti shed tears about people considering her as an R&B, black artist all these years just killed me. To tell you the truth, I would much rather see a movie on Patti than ReRe if you ask me!

Oddly enough I think she did "cross over" but not to the point of "megastar chart success" like Aretha and Diana. I wonder if it's a Philly thing though. Most of them did achieve success like Patti but are not looked at in the same way as their Detroit, Chicago and Memphis contemporaries.

We all know she did go "pop" somewhere around the mid-80's, when she left PIR for MCA. She had her first "pop" hit in 10 years since "Lady Marmalade" with "New Attitude" from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. From 1986 to around 1992, Patti finally got the mainstream attention she always wanted as an artist. At the same time, people still considered her a R&B act, so really, like you said, she always had a "crossover" appeal in every era from the 60's to now, with some form of mainstream attention. The only thing was it was just different from alot of her contemporaries.

Right. But I think she was too soul for rock and roll and too rock and roll for soul, you get what I mean? She's been respected since she started but I guess her music never lived up to her stage persona and vice versa.

Exactly. She's was been about being "the real thing". I gotta give her props because for six decades, she's been giving people that and she is successful in her own right. Even though I think she hasn't gotten the props from others because Patti, along with Marvin, Aretha, Curtis, Stevie, and others, changed the wheel of R&B music as we know it today. The reinventions, new sounds and styles all have history behind them. She adapted to each era of popular music successfully as well, without looking like a product of a particular era.

i actually liked the 'dreamgirls' movie... it obviously doesn't beat the O.G. (which i grew up on), but i think they stayed pretty faithful to it.

and yeah, most likely the film (if there ever is one) would be based on 'don't block the blessings', which is a good book. it would probably start off with the 'if you asked me to' video, and everything surrounding that.
