Huh??? A commemorative expanded edition for a 10-year old album that was driven by too much hype. I wasn't really into Keys when that album came out actually. I jumped on the bandwagon when The Diary of Alicia Keys came out in late 2003 and quickly got off shortly after As I Am. Very weird indeed...but it was a decent album. I don't know if I'll be buying this though. [Edited 4/12/11 16:14pm] Check me out and add me on:

this seems like a ridiculous project a commemorative 10th year anniversary edition for this album?? The album is too 'recent' for that sort of treatment and it's not as if it was some big, important, groundbreaking album in the first place.

Why do the covers look so cheap?

That building on the second cover slightly resembles a needle
I was the same way too, I wasn't feeling her right away when she came out, it took almost a year for her to grow on me though I liked piano music too and I got the debut album a year after it came out. I loved her second album right away though and played it for months. She lost me with the third one when 'No One' was too boring. With the 4th one, I only like a couple of songs including Sing it In a Love Song.

All of J-Records releases look cheap...most of popular music's album covers today look ridiculously cheap. But I can tell from these two releases, it's gonna be packaged as some special digi-pak package. Check me out and add me on:

Because the record labels pay shit these days. Good designers would rather focus on indy labels and not put up with big client BS.

I felt the same way. Diary of Alicia Keys was a very good album but everything else after has been a let down and i wasn't overly impressed with her debut album either. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

At least the first uses the original image as the source, but what the hell is that second one supposed to be?
Did she do the design herself or something?

It looks like an unfinished computer graphics design... Check me out and add me on:

Man you guy's really hate on her , yeah she's not perfect, but damn the woman is talented, and definitely has made some good tunes along the way. I mean this is just like the GaGa forum i am not a fan of GaGa i admit. But sometimes you guy's just hate to hate on her Alicia is talented and this was a good album, one of the best of 2001 Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Songs In A Minor really had some decent songs on it like "Rock Wit U", "The Life", "Butterflyz", her cover of "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore", and "Troubles". But I had got so tired of the massive replays and attention of "Fallin'" and "A Woman's Worth". They were just overplayed and played out. Plus, critics and others were hailing her as the modern female Stevie and all of this other craziness and it just didn't resonate with me or win me over. The album overall sounded like any other modern R&B-pop release that came out in the late-90s into the millennium. It just seemed like she was another one of Clive's creations and dreams that happened to make it into the industry and sell out millions and millions of her album and get hype and press to help her image and music sale. Her voice was pleasant, but at that time, I really wasn't impressed.
Diary, though moved me more, in seeing that she had a little more control and the songs actually worked on that release. But Alicia, overall as an artist, has been built her career on what she can use from the past to create something of her own. I mean that in both the most explicit and inexplicit way possible. The only records by far that really showed her range for me were Unplugged and As I Am, which really put her in this different light that had potential of being great, but ended up looking once again controlled and contrived. And don't get me started on her recent album, which I didn't even buy. But I admire her as a vocalist and musician in concert, because it seems that she commands more onstage than she does in the studio. I guess that is why the MTV Unplugged disc gets more props from me more than any other album she has done by far. [Edited 4/13/11 0:10am] Check me out and add me on:

I wish Sign O the Times got this treatment.

Oh YES!
I've given up on deluxe edition treatment from cheap ass WB, but at least a proper remastering, say, in the same vein as "Box O' Chocolates"? That would've been grand.

Yes, she was just another female r&b artist with good looks, and though nice, they stuck her behind a piano to mask the fact she's another cookie cutter one....she wasn't the next this or that, and though a good piano player, I can play Fur Elise and play scales, that's what she did at the MTV Awards. Definitely a Clive Davis product, but she came into her own with the second album. I love Rock With U, Butterflyz, Caged Bird and that Issac Hayes song too.

I've played her last two albums a lot.
I love "No One" and I'm offended when people say it's not a good song.
The second cover art design is just inexcusably bad. It's possible that it's made of some sort of unusual materials and looks different as a finished product, but as such it looks like one of the worst covers ever made.

I don't think that Warner Brothers is the problem. If Prince wanted them to release deluxe editions of his albums that is exactly what they would do.

Isn't it a shame that an album like SOTT---which really was groundbreaking, edgy and important---hasn't been remastered yet? It's ridiculous.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
SOTT will never be remastered and released in expanded form as long as Prince remains a stubborn, middle-aged drama queen. No one can fault Warner.

I'm afraid that might be correct. I hope I'm wrong though.
