Someone here will like this a lot. razz lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Clive Davis is full of himself and knows how to spin a story. And I don't trust anybody that ties a sweater around their shoulders (L.A. Reid). Anyway...nice label-approved puff piece. Whitney, in terms of popularity and crossover, wasn't doing anything her cousin Dionne hadn't done 20 years earlier.

Just posting something in this thread right now so it will go to "My Org" and I'll be able to find it later on when I have time to watch the videos and post a response.

And just what the hell have I been saying about her since 1985? The same damn thing.

"They watered it way down for a pop audience"....

"They shopped around and gave her records to pop stations from day one which was unheard of for R&B artists at the time"....

I've said similar shit since day one when that little goodie two shoes first came on the scene. And just look at one of the artists that said they absolutely wanted to be her when they were growing up...somebody from Destiny's Child, a group that ain't got the first damn jam and Brandy has said that she idolized her too and look how weak her music is also. Nobody funky has said how much they idolized her. But then again, nobody funky continued to exist much longer after she brought her little weak ass onto the scene either. Certainly no one that would have been young enough to completely grow up on her music their whole life.

And look who she runs to after she gets booed for not being "black enough", LA and Babyface who were a much weaker version of Jam and Lewis. And then they even had the nerve to brag about how weak their music was.....

"From around 1981 until the time that LA and Babyface came out, R&B music was rough and rugged but they smoothed it out. Tap on the drums lightly, make it smoother. They turned it into an upscale upper class type of music".....

Hell, that's not a good thing, that's a horrible thing because rough and rugged is what music should be, not some little weak bitch ass sissified music for folks to put on airs like their shit don't stink. Fuck all that damn la-de-da shit, get down and funky. No, LA and Babyface's type of music, especially Babyface's type of music, would not have gone over well in the early 1980s before Shitney Ass Houston brought her weak ass on the scene. The Deele could throwdown but most, if not all of Babyface's productions after he left the group were absolutely weak and horrible, especially the ones in the 1990s.

Lord, those two videos done pissed me off because I have said the same shit for years. The only difference is, the weak asses in those videos think her changing music was a good thing. Weak tasted sissies, I tell ya. evillol

Oh, I'm not through honey. When I heard that part with LA and Babyface saying to tap on the drums lightly and make it much softer and smoother, I wanted to absolutely vomit all over the computer because I feel the exact opposite about music.

The way I like music is best described when Little Richard was talking about when he worked with Jimi Hendrix......

Oh honey, Jimi was the hardest thing I had ever seen. He was playin' that good ole rock and roll music and I could just feel him vibrating and grinding underneath me.....just a' throbbing up underneath me until it got good to me and pretty soon I was just a' hollerin'....

Wooooooo.......woooooooooo.........WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO........

And he uh.......he made my big toe stand up in my boot.

Babyface's Whip Appeal was far worse than The Deele's Two Occasions.

I loved the Babyface stuff in the 90's and though I like it for old times sake, a lot of it seems fuzzy now though I still have most of those r&b CD's and I will not be listening to them often. I'm listening to Timbaland and New Jack Swing and dance/techno music from the 90's, plus the veteran artists.

I only like upbeat Whitney music, otherwise give me Mariah over her. At least she writes, even if you don't like her music, she at least puts in her own effort.

It's not as dangerous as Whip Appeal, believe me. Because of THIS song (co-written by Babyface AND Pebbles), all of the sudden it was OK for grown men to be total pussies for their girlfriends/wives. disbelief

Let me be clear, I am not defending Whitney or suggesting her music is good. However, your argument is a bit silly. You give Mariah a pass because she co-writes her music? Crappy music is crappy music no matter who wrote it. I would much rather hear a great singer sing a great song that somebody else wrote as opposed to that same singer doing a crappy song they had a hand in writing.

I'm tickled at the idea that anything that's not vociferously anti-Whitney sentiment has to be prefaced with the kind of qualification one has to make when making a point that could be misconstrued as voicing support for a notorious dictator or mass-murderer. (e.g. "Get it straight; I'm not defending Saddam, ok?? I'm just saying he was no worse than some of the other despots out there...", etc)

I'd do exactly the same, but thinking about it makes me chuckle. lol
