Thelma Houston - You Used to Hold me so Tight I'm playing this so LOUD right now! A prime example of a good song, no matter who's singing it, but Thelma delivered!!

Bangin' joint! The only sad thing about the Houston/Flyte Tyme union is that it only happened once. I always wished that they (Jam & Lewis) played into her subsequent release ("Throw You Down.") Big, booming voice and such spotty chart positions. Other than "Don't Leave Me This Way," "You Used to Hold Me So Tight" was her biggest charting R&B hit, I believe. She should have had SO MANY MORE hits after this! Love it just the same and the album, "Qualifying Heat" should have been an ENTIRE Flyte Tyme affair and not just 3 songs. What'cha gonna do, right? Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

You are so dead on! Side 1 (jam & lewis)is on fire from beginning to end. Side 2 is so weak in comparison. Why didn't they do the complete album is a mystery to me?! They definitely had some chemistry!

I wonder that too. I don't think I ever listened to side 2 of Qualifying Heat. Maybe it was a time or money issues. Jam and Lewis were starting to be the go-to producers by this time.

I remember Thelma and her record company doing something really unique with this project. She filmed three music videos ("You Used To Hold So Tight","Fantasy & Heartbreak" and "I'd Rather Spend The Bad Times With You (Than Spend The Good Times With Someone New") and linked them together, like a mini-movie.At the time,no other artist was doing this.

Great that the ^Heat-Medley^ is posted online and thanks for sharing therevolutionwillnotbe !
Besides that good stuff, the backspinned-intro vocals on "You Used To Hold Me So Tight" were so different, surprising and unique. At least, that's how i experienced it. It's still one of my fave intro's with the powerful electric beats right after that vocal-chant, from which i never could figure out what exactly was sung in there lol. I guess it might be the song-chorus ?
... and i guess there was anotha jammy on there. Freakin hay + that breakdown @ 2:54 ... synth-heaven
The faded part at the end is where she's crackin' up with J&L and first saying, then again shouting: "...You guys are CRAYYYZY ! on the album-mix immediately followed by that hypnotizing intro-chant of "You Use To..." ... infectious eargasm ! [Edited 4/11/11 0:40am]

This is it! I remember seeing this back in 1984 and I thought it was an interesting idea.Instead of making one video for the single, she made a 3-song mini-movie.

You Use to Hold Me So Tight and I'd Rather Spend the Bad Times With You... are two of the best tunes Jam/Lewis produced in the early days. I'd Rather Spend is a serious jam (one of my FlyteTyme favorites). The bassline is funky as doo-doo. I enjoy Thelma voice on these tunes, but for me most of the early FlyteTyme tunes were faceless -- they were all about the fantastic music/production. Their tunes were like no one else at the time.

No problem. I stumbled upon it on YouTube last week; hadn't seen it since the '80s on 'Video Soul'.

According to Wikipedia it peaked at #59 on Billboard's R&B chart and #80 in the UK.

that 'Heat Medley' video mini-movie is GREAT! I liked back in '85 and I like it now.It was a great way to showcase three great songs from her album.
