Any other Nine Inch Nails fans on here?

Have gotten into them lately in a big way....

Absolutely in love with The Fragile and Downward Spiral. Just bought With Teeth which is very different, but it's starting to grow on me.

Any other fans on here??

I had a post about them a few months ago wink

Trent is a musical genius, he is like a Prince type character where he play's all the instruments on his album most of the time, and then has a touring band.

Pretty Hate Machine PERSONALLY is my favorite, i love the down & dirty production, the weird sounds & keyboard/drum crunches the album has. it has some great rock songs like Head Like A Hole, Terrible lie & my all time favorite NIN track Sin

Then there's the striking ballad Something I Can Never Have, the soothing Sanctified & the funky Kinda I Want to...also there cover of Get Down Make love is a heavy industrial sexy feat of sexy lol

Broken is another must with classics like Wish, Gave Up, Happiness In Slavery, Last etc

But The Fragile & Downward are great wink

With Teeth is one of my least faves but it's still good

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

HUGE, HUGE, HUGE FAN RIGHT HERE! Actually used to post on the nin.com forums and echoingthesound (fansite) for a while, but didn't have the time to keep doing so as well as here.

Martin Atkins from Pigface is a friend of mine, and he was one of the first people to support Trent by featuring him on the Pigface song "Suck". Martin also played drums on the track "Wish" which won a Grammy and appears in the "Head Like A Hole" video playing drums.

My favorite albums are Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Year Zero and Downward Spiral. All their albums are pretty much amazing, but like most double CD's I feel that "The Fragile" could have had some fat trimmed from it... it still rocks though.

With Teeth is probably actually my least favorite NIN record. Aside from "The Hand That Feeds" and "Every Day Is Exactly The Same" which are stellar, the rest of the album is VERY patchy to me. It's the first album Trent made after kicking his addiction problems, and it followed the biggest gap between albums, coming out 6 years after "The Fragile".

I think in many ways Trent was rediscovering himself, but when he came back after "With Teeth" with the absolutely stellar "Year Zero" he had definitely found himself again, so to speak. You need to check out "Year Zero", it's a concept record but unlike many concept albums it is also very accessible. There was an interactive online world created around the concept of Year Zero which was fully immersive and amazing fun at the time.

You can read all about it online (Google the phrase Year Zero ARG), but essentially it started with a USB key found in a bathroom at a concert with a new song and clues on it, and then a website URL was pieced together from highlighted letters on the tour t-shirt which led to dozens more websites, all painting a picture of a future almost post-apocalyptic world where the government controlled everything through toxins in the water. It was incredible and I've never been part of anything like it, it was so much fun and so detailed. In fact I remember having incredibly vivid dreams where I was a part of that world while all of this was going on, so that shows you how well they painted the pictures and landscapes and backstories. There was even one moment where a series of clues led fans in to a specific place in the real world, where they were thrown into a van with no idea where they were going, then ushered by security into a warehouse where NIN proceeded to play a private concert. I even remember seeing posters around London with clues on them and the "Art Is Resistance" logo which was one of the themes of the game, but if you weren't into NIN you'd have no idea what these posters meant.

Trent has been working on evolving this whole story and concept into a "Year Zero" TV series which as I understand it, is debuting next year on one of the major TV networks in the US.

I think Trent is an absolute visionary, genius and legend. One of the greatest artists and songwriters of all time. And he fully deserved the Oscar he won for doing "The Social Network" score, as well.

^^ Pigface are fantastic.

I love Martins drumming, it almost sounds tribal.

I have Pigface vs The World on as I type this.

I was really into NIN around the time of their first two albums.

I am no audio expert, but I just love the sound that Trent had with those albums.

Tbh, I lost a lot of interest in them when Trent came off drugs.

Yep - that's his second book actually. His first is called "TOUR:SMART" and it's basically the bible for any and every touring band, jam packed with tips, hints, stories and advice. It's pretty much essential reading for anyone in a band, IMO.

He's making a sequel to it - entitled BAND:SMART - and I have written a chapter for it which is set to be included smile

And yeah, tribal is a great word to describe his drumming!

He goes around the world giving lectures on touring, DIY music advice, etc. Me and my friend Sam recorded him and took some pictures when he came to Birmingham and edited it into the following audio slideshow:

And here's another video you might enjoy... with me in it smile

If you ever get the chance to see one of the talks he does, you should definitely go. Well worth it - even if you're not a musician.

Thanks for posting.

Martin Atkins sounds like he has some amazing stories to tell, I love people like that.

People like Malcolm Maclaren, Tony James and Bill Drummond are like that too, been in the business for years and have so much to give in terms of advice, stories etc.

Tony James was the bassist in Generation X with Billy Idol, he then went on to form Sigue Sigue Sputnik who had big success in the late 80's. Anyway, on the official SSS website, James wrote a chapter by chapter factual story of the Sputniks, how they started, how they did it, how they went tits up, it's just a great great rock n roll story.

Sorry for topic change.

I think you've overlooked a few gems there... Right Where It Belongs is a really beautiful track and I adore All The Love In The World as well. As a new fan who has yet to complete my NIN collection I concede that With Teeth isn't on par with The Fragile and there is definately a few filler tracks, but it's still a pretty solid record.

I'm planning on getting Year Zero next. The concept sounds fascinating so I'm really intrigued.

Is it true that Trent has retired from touring? That always seem to happen when I get into a new artist/band.

I don't think the weaker tunes on With Teeth are even up to par with what I consider to be the weaker tunes on the other albums. But they're still NIN, and even Trent-on-autopilot is still better than most stuff lol

Yeah, Trent has retired NIN as a live act, to focus on movie scoring, and his new band "HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS" with his wife Mariqueen. But, he is working on new NIN music (as of recently) and so it might end up that he brings back NIN after he releases a new album. I certainly hope that he does. I mean he took 6 years off between Fragile and With Teeth like I said, and I remember in the early 00's there were some people who didn't think he was coming back. With Trent pretty much anything is possible.

Anyway, here's a pic of some of the stuff I have (excluding digital obv). There's some holes in the collection, a couple of things I have appear to have been misplaced, and the magazine is just one random one of many I have that was just lying around. But there's a few items that are really cool.

Yeah, they are amazing. I mean the "Broken" mini-movie is more fucked up than most horror movies. Truly twisted and disturbing.

You're referring to the 4min23 version of "Sin" and not the 2 minute edit that was on the "Closure" video release, right? It is pretty awesome.

I'm kinda mad that Trent slowed down somewhat on the music video front especially given how creative he (and Rob Sheridan) are in that regard. Year Zero should have had more than just the "Survivalism" video. But we're getting the TV series, so that's good. I don't recall any actual music videos for "The Slip" aside from the rehearsal DVD that came with it, either.

I'm not too sure about HTDA. I think the last release was just them testing the waters. It felt a bit unfocused. But I think they're capable of better stuff - Mariqueen has a nice voice.
