I'm not sure if I really like the way Todd Rundgren sings these ways. I understand that he is older now, but he sounds a bit like a singing drunk to me. It's usually the way he sings longer notes these days that irritates me.

Not sure how I feel about Michael Jackson's later "mushy" voice either. I was listening to "Much Too Soon" the other day and just had to admit to myself that it sounded quite fake to me.

Dave1 of Chromeo seems to have developed some annoying mannerisms over the years and should just go back to using autotune. confused

K maybe we're thinking of different hee hees. I was thinking more of the ones like, "Go on girl, Hee-Hee!"(from Way U Make Me Feel), you know, the ones that make you wonder if you should consider that as a part of actual 'lyrics' lol But thanks I love this song!!

he got the 'hee hee's' from STEVIE WONDER. listen to songs like 'maybe your baby' and 'fine young thing. and the 'shamon' was jacked from mavis staples.

I don't know if it necessarily involves my favorite singers, but I generally don't care for when people yell out "Remix!" or announce some producer/beatmaker's name in a song. I don't recall anybody in the old days saying Ted Macero, George Martin, Norman Whitfield, Mutt Lange, or Bob Rock in a tune. lol

EXACTLY!

Missy ruined it for me when she ditched her cool reserved mannerism after Miss E. So Addictive and started hollering over her and other people's songs.

I miss the days where it sounded like she adlipped from a phone.

It was cool on the Brandy album. Everything else though... lol

I liked when he didn't say it but said "they said I couldn't do it again but I did". I actually liked that one. lol

His first real production, I think, was with Aaliyah and he wasn't really popular yet so it was more like "RJ makes it hot". He started to really get recognized with his work on Mary's Share My World ("I Can Love You", "Can't Get You Off My Mind", the title track) and he wasn't even 20 yet when that album got him on the scene for good.

After Brandy though everything changed. lol

I hear you. I will say that Brandy says it best (although I liked the way Whitney says it, too).

He did a good job on One in a Million despite being overshadowed by Tim & Missy. "I Can Love You" is still my favorite Mary track. music

Really? eek EVEN HIS VOCAL HICCUPS?? And what about his "HO!" shoutings?

I think it started in Thriller era...In Wanna Be Startin Something I believe he goes ho~ ho~ hee hee hee ~ at the end

Billie Jean; "...But the kid is not my son, hee, hee, hee", etc.

MJ was doing that stuff since the beginning. You can see instances of it on Off the Wall and "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" as well.

Okay, true - it goes back further than I remembered.

So I'll rephrase that to say, I hate how frequent it became. Once in a rare while it wasn't a big deal and hell, I didn't even notice it - but then it got to the point where MJ was constantly making weird sounds all over songs and it really just became fucking annoying.

When Mariah Carey started doing that whisper-singing stuff around the Butterfly album. It increased to the point where a lot of her songs were mainly her doing that, and I hated it. It always drove me nuts because I love her voice and when she actually just SINGS.

I was never crazy about all the kind of vocal ticks and 'hee hee' and stuff Michael Jackson started doing around...was it the Bad or Dangerous era?

I love Mariah's whispery voice. She was doing it from the first album on, but as her belting voice deteriorated she used it more and more.

I agree on Michael. He always did the same ole shit on every track. He wasn't as vocally diverse as I would have expected. Still love his voice though! But I only have 6 of his CDs.

I was a Mariah Carey uber-fan up until the "Loverboy" video, and pretty much owned everything she released until after Glitter.

I don't remember her really doing the whisper-thing at all until Butterfly. It's possible you're right though - maybe that's when it became so prominent on her work.

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttteeeeeeeeeeeeeedddddddddd it!

Everybody keeps saying her voice deteriorated but I really don't buy that for a second because there were always points on her songs where she'd go out of the whisper-voice and sing like she used to. I think it's just that someone told her that sounded really hot ( mad ) and she kept doing it and the rest is history... neutral

Stevie did it first? That's great. But even so, it still sucks and who did it first is kinda beside the point.

Also...thing is, Stevie didn't start doing it all over the place in damn near every song either the way Michael did lol .

1.MJ: adding an extra hard K to his H's

(I'll reach oooooout my kkkkkHHAAAAAANNNNND toooooooyyyyyyyyooooooooou)

2. MJ: his virbrato got a lil out of control in later years.

3. TTD: when his vocals get all loud and out of control.

4. Stevie: when he oversings live.

. Okay i don't listen to Britney spears, but on a couple of her earlier songs she did this weird thing with her voice in between every other word that sounds like someone is unzipping a zipper...check it out. its weird.

peep Stevie's ad libs on I Love Every Little Thing About You and you'll here where Mike got more than just the hee hees, but the "chika ah", (hard to spell it phonetically but listen and then think of the extended video for The Way You Make Me Feel), amongst other vocal moments

Mariah Carey's posing and finger waiving. She always poses and tries too hard to look "pretty" in her videos. The finger waiving and hand flying she does when she hits her high notes are also most annoying. Mimi...we get it....you're cute....and it's a bit of a strain for you to immitate Minnie Ripperton. He is so not my favorite, but I have to mention that I pretty much hate any song produced by Jermaine Dupri. Ugh. The way he talks and laughs his way through every track just ruins the song for me. As for my favorite:

Madonna - rhyming 'wait', 'hesitate', 'celebrate,' and/or 'late'.

Prince - during "Emancipation" especially, I really disliked how Prince would say the title of the song at the very beginning of each song - “Right Back Here In My Arms,” “Get Yo Groove On,” “(Big) White Mansion,” just to name A FEW.

Mariah Carey – the whisper thing. Especially when she whispers out of key, like in “Butterfly” or “Through the Rain.”

Mariah also tends to rely a bit too heavily on adverbs in her lyrics.

"She made me glad to be a man"

As much as I love Rahsaan Patterson, when live he drags his songs out a bit much for my taste. I love improv, and a couple of reinterpertations are great. But he'll take a 4 minute song and make it 10, and after a while I can't even remember what he is singing.

Maxwell does too many audience shout outs in concert. Too much "do you love me?" "yall all right" and "help me sing" call outs. I think he does it when his voice is going out.
