Finally: The Grammys Reduce & Combine Categories It looks like all of the recent kvetching about the state of the modern Grammys has paid off—in a way that does nothing to address any of those concerns, really, but there are still changes afoot. The Recording Academy has announced that it will cut the current, overstuffed award list from 109 categories to a somewhat more svelte 78 beginning with next year’s ceremony, streamlining the various confusing subdivisions of each and creating a parallel system between each genre. Perhaps the most important revision: There is no longer any distinction between male and female performers in any category, so next year’s competition will be much, much more contentious, as Lady Gaga will be forced to go up against whatever John Mayer has crapped out by then. Also, the awards for hard rock and metal have now been combined—with the academy noting that “distinction was often hairsplitting”—while “rock instrumental” (like “country instrumental”) no longer even exists, which is bad news for Jeff Beck. The other major shake-up came in the R&B genre, something that has been halved from its ridiculous eight separate sub-categories into a more manageable four, doing away with all those murky “traditional,” “urban/alternative,” and “contemporary” divisions. You can see a complete side-by-side list of the changes here, and say your goodbyes to our perennial favorite nominee, the “Best Hawaiian Music Album.”

Makes the Grammys more challenging.

Good. Better late than never. Now if they can just quit nominating crap that doesn't deserve it, they'd really be on a roll.
I wonder if they're going to leave the number of nominations per category the same? [Edited 4/6/11 13:32pm]

Maybe they can get rid of country altogether.

Very definitely a "Who gives a shit?" event. test

Pretty much. | |

I don't think it's fair to get rid of the Male and Female categories. A lot of potential nominees won't have a chance. Unless they are going to nominate 10 people in one category. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I could care less anymore. Like really do anyone give a funk about a Grammy unless it was a nominee that was valid to have a nod?

Since there are thousands of albums released each year, and there's only 4 or 5 nominees in a category, most didn't have a chance anyway. I don't watch awards programs, so I don't care either way. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think country has 2 different award shows that are shown on network TV, so it won't make a difference. They also had best R&B Album and then best Contemporary R&B Album.
I wonder if those will merge. [Edited 4/6/11 16:34pm]

There's no longer a Contemporary R&B album award.

^Thanks.
I remember for the 2010 Grammys (honoring 2009) the winners were:
Best R&B Album: Maxwell
Best Contemporary Album: Beyonce

I think Letterman brought this up in his top 10 once. What's the difference between 'Song of the Year' and 'Record of the Year'??
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Song of the year = mainly who people THINK wrote the best song of that year. It's mainly just on a creative basis.
Record of the year = who people THINK was the best RECORD. Meaning artistic and commercial wise. So those factors are combined.

Dumbest thing ever, they didnt even go near their real issues, the one issue is catering to the crowd instead of going with the best for real. When choosing an Album of the Year nominee they purposely choose 1 from each genre, you get your token rap one your token "critics" choice one, the country one, the one that sold the most, and then usually a wild card you didnt expect, like a Herbie Hancock or Alison Krauss type thing. This system needs to go, stop catering to genres, if all 5 albums that year that are getting the most feedback and they are all country, shit nominate them, who cares what people think, teenagers dont watch this shit, so why nominate Lil Wayne just to get that teen crowd to watch.
Next thing, why the double standard? We def bitched on threads about how the grammy's and music lacked choices in ROCK FEMALES and now we want all the male female shit merged? that wasnt the issue here, the issue is 25 performances on the show and 8 awards given out in 3 hours? give me a break already, its not needed this is not a telethon or some hurricane relief aid concert. In that respect the Grammys totally fucked this up royally, it would be like them looking at Major League Baseball and saying, lets make the playoffs longer but not shorten the season? excuse me? do you want them playing baseball in the snow, sounds like the comissioner of baseball runs the grammys too "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Here's a random thought.....how many members are on the acamdemy that actually work in the business, if they don't, WHY ARE THEY STILL ON THE BOARD!!??
You would think if the members had enough clout to vote, they can also influence the lablels to release better albums!!!!

You know what I love about this? They totally screwed further chances to improve on how they do their show. I just wish only one million watch it next year just to see what their response will be.

Ya know Jimmy Jam is part of the Academy. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

And the nominees for the album that sucked the least are: I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

To be honest, it'll be silly to get upset about this. This is the same award who gave Milli Vanilli Best New Artist and Jethro Tull the best heavy metal recording award.
Besides this is a popularity contest anyways. Once you know of their intentions, shit like this shouldn't get you riled up. I've stopped thinking the Grammys were all that about a few years ago.

I don't think it's right because this is going to make it easier for one artist to sweep an entire category (i.e., Beyonce). "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley
