Critically Panned Albums You have a soft spot for? Which albums that were generally not well received on release do have a soft spot for?
My Picks
Stevie Wonder / In Square Circle.
This has some great songs on it, I love Part Time Lover, I love You Too Much, Stranger On The Shore Of Love, Never in Your Sun, Go Home and Overjoyed. And The rest are all solid tracks. It might not be up there with the albums that came before but I still really enjoy it.
Terence Trent D'arby / Neither Fish Nor Flesh.
Such a great album, I can't understand why on earth this was so badly received. It's my second favorite of his albums, only bettered by his masterpiece Symphony Or Damn.

I like that poster. And I liked the album when it came out, too. Some real good songs on it. It´s just that the bad stuff is so bad that it tarnishes the rest of the album but other than that it is a decent album. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I don't read reviews. I don't know what they're for. I can listen (or watch) to something and decide if I like it or not. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Break Up
I thought this album was pretty good, but reviews were not nice.

Me too, and I have that poster on my wall (the version without all the text)
Also, I feel "Come" deserved much better reviews than it got. That album is fucking amazing. |

Well alot of albums that were so called "contract filler" to get off labels like
INXS "Full Moon Diry Hearts" PRINCE "Chaos and Disorder"
or things like
DURAN DURAN "Pop Trash: (though this didnt get that many bad reviews) MARIAH CAREY "Glitter" probably her most "interesting" album in her career. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

One of her best hard thumping, easily catchy, funkiest and banging albums she put out. With at least up to 8 tracks that are stellar..even though she doesnt have a specific ownership in the sound..it still is her own voice and lyricism. Takes me back to the Madonna album..where she has not really touched too much on 80's funk rhythms since.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about ''In Square Circle''. I actually was going to start a thread about it. But yes, it's Stevie's best 80's album in my opinion (I prefer it over ''Hotter Than July''). Very dark and moody album. Highly underrated.

Her foot? It looks nothing like a foot, particularly when you see the red glove on her other hand. But yeah, this album yielded the super-funky Don't Stand Another Chance, and Jesse Johnson's Prince-like French Blue was a B-side

I'm with you 100% on "Hissing of Summer Lawns." Prince agrees with you too. I played it to a friend once and he said that it "smacks of arthouse pretension." What a load of BS.
Haven't heard the Stevie Wonder album. I know it doesn't get much love. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Where have all the original music lovers gone on this site? The responses have become so predictable. At anyrate, here are my pics:
Toni Childs: House of Hope
SwingOutSister: Kaleidoscope World
Tracy Chapman: Crossroads
Sinead O'conner: Am I Not Your Girl?
Third Eye Blind: Blue
The Human League: Crash
Cyndi Lauper: True Colors
Duran Duran: Notorious

Alanis Morrisette - Supposed Former....
Much better than Jagged Little Pill in my eyes.

Was Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie actually "panned" or just not as well received as JLP? I don't think there's a long list of panned mainstream albums, because most of the time reviews are varied just like fan/listener reactions. It's not very often when they gang up on an artist, plus sometimes it seems there are critics who purposely refuse to "go with the flow" in order to pander to a different audience.
