i remember when 'pumps and a bump' came out... i was rollin'! i mean, WHY was he wearing those zebra-striped speedos? and he got an erection during the course of the video. then they had to 'ban' that one and make an alternate video... then he came out with the video recently, where he rhymed about how jay-z sold his soul to the devil, and at the end of the video he was dunking 'jay-z' in the water to baptize him...
i liked 'pray' though... come on.
you can't deny he put on a great show.

remember bobby jimmy and the critters did the parody of 'let's get it started', called 'somebody farted'?

People overlook his 1988 work. "Let's Get It Started" is still one of the best dance records to emerge with hip-hop when it came out. I prefer it over "Can't Touch This" actually.

I always got a lick out of his dancing. His music? Not so much. One of the worst rappers out at that time.

The beats were what was popping but when you did hear him rapping, he was definitely hokey.

They were more feminine in this one. My mom didn't like me watching this one back then. Wonder why...

When people actually cared about artists making full-length music videos/short films, MC Hammer dropped "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em" on VHS! This beat still knocks. I crushed kinda hard on girly in the pink dress too. There's also a nice little titty shot (near slip at least) just before this song in the club scene that had this 6 year-old rewinding and pausing when the parentals weren't around

Man, I forgot how much I used to love this video!

I remember "Let's Get It Started" very well. That one was my favorite also.
As for "U Can't Touch This", once you've heard the ultimix version that was being played in the gay clubs during that era, you'll never want to hear the original version again. It has the song mixed with the 12 Inch version of Rick James' "Super Freak" and Kraftwerk's "Numbers" and it kept the whore's a'hollerin' and the asses a'shakin'......

He was throwing down. There was shit hop at the time (the type of rap that took over the 1990s and still exists today....the slow "beat with some talking" type rap) but it was mostly underground where it belonged. MC Hammer was making the type of rap or hip hop like the other acts before him that were making that were getting airplay on the mainstream R&B stations such as Pretty Tony, Freestyle, Egyptian Lover, Soul Sonic Force, Twilight 22, Run DMC, etc. He was making what music should be...to dance to.
Considering that most of his music was made from samples which is really just "mixing" and mixing is a job for a DJ, not a musician. Just think about what a DJ's goal is. It's to get the asses shakin'. It's not to provide a background that is slow enough for someone to simply "talk" over. So actually he was just doing what he was supposed to do. It was the rappers that came later that had the wrong idea. I mean "mixing" that wasn't meant for the dance floor.... Andy is a four letter word.
