man i love the sound of this record, but her voice is giving me problems.

I'll admit, her voice is something to get used to for some, but for me, it suits the songs on this album perfectly.

I bet that even Vainandy would dig this lol It's fast, uptempo and doesn't have a trace of hip-hop in it.

Yes, you know me very well. It does sound pretty good.

Wow, the fact that you like it Vainandy holds a lot of weight with me--because you don't like anything much past the 70s-early 80s!

who produced this album?

Somebody named umpa lumpa lol

lol

Actually the producer is a Hungarian dude by the name of Opolopo. He has released two solo albums: Omnifarious and Voltage Controlled Feelings. If I remember correctly he's also Amalia's husband. She is Swedish, I think. In the 21st century funk is truly global!

I honestly don't know why people are trippin on the vocals. She is light years above and beyond the millions of crap ass singers out there. I wouldn't compare her to any classic diva but the vocals aren't bad. As for some of the gutteral shit she does in some of the songs, it's called vocal styling! lol

First off, I just want to thank the org for introducing this record and artist to me. Something happened this weekend as I was looking through one of threads and this artist and album came up and let me tell you all, this has to be the funkiest trip I've heard in years. Not saying that new stuff from artists like Prince himself hasn't put me in stitches from a funk standpoint, but this album is just too much.

This album is.... *drumrolls*

AMALIA - ART SLAVE (2011)

It's definitely one of those records that will take you back and even though I've just been introduced to this, I haven't stopped playing this since yesterday. Amalia is part Chaka, part Betty Davis and then some and this record sounds like a lost 80's funk/dance record that was put in the vaults and released now in the 21st century. Honestly, its like Feel For You/Destiny-era Chaka has been resurrected. Too many comparisons I know, but this is one impressive release with a production that is headbusting! This is MY THE album of the year so far! Funkateers jump on this, please. You won't regret this trust me.

No not feeling it.

I know it's supposed to sound like generic 80's dance music. But I do not like generic 80's dance music.

Best pop single of the year so far

Toro Y Moi "Still Sound"

Generic 80's dance music? To an extent, maybe, but most of the songs on this album sound like genuine 80s funk. No it's not a perfect record, but it is a bonafide groove fest. The hooks click and the beats resonate harder than anything I've heard this year so far.

I gave this a proper listen and am impressed. The last three songs sounded like each other to me but I will listen again. If I could compare her voice to someone established I'd go with Lisa Stansfield, not too many vocal gymnastics or trying too hard. It's very much a fit with my taste in music, great recomendation silverchild. Thanks.

TBH I could've done without the last three (though they were cool). Especially take the rapper out of that "Butta Fly" song.

I agree! There are some flirtations with that modern soul sound which mess up the flow of the album, including the track with Probe Dms ("Zebra Butt-A-Fly") and ("Psychoanalyze"), but overall those tracks are even listenable compared to the more stronger songs. This is a funky record with a throwback and modern quality that I haven't really heard in a while. I'm tired of these weak producers who try hard to do that with alot of dance-pop releases, but fail to hold up. This is one that just pulls out all of the stops and it doesn't sound like Opolopo was trying hard to go for that vintage sound. Like I said earlier in this thread, if someone was playing most of the songs on this record, I wouldn't even be able to tell if they were recorded 30 years ago or today and that's the honest truth.

I can't stop listening to "Life's A Dance (Nu Opo Swing Mix)". The shit is a funky mindf**k forreal! It's blasting on my headphones right now.

I was listening to the original mix earlier this week, but it has nothing on the Nu Opo Swing Mix:
