Love the production, but her voice troubles me to be honest.
I admit, she's not the greatest vocalist. She's alot like Betty Davis, who also wasn't a great vocalist. It's all about the attiude and energy that she brings to these songs. It works! The production is amazing too.
PaisleyPark4 Ville deserves FULL CREDIT for this!! I was turned on immediatly!! It's been in heavy rotation in my ears for a couple of weeks. It's even makes the old stuff sound good again!!
Topic/Thread - New r&b, funk, dance releases anyone?

The vocals were actually my favorite part besides from the production. It animates the songs. She DEFINITELY gives off a BETTY vibe!!!

No its not the Betty Davis factor, I don't know how to explain it, something about her voice irks me(the way she sings in the into of Bonafide for example).
First off, I just want to thank the org for introducing this record and artist to me. Something happened this weekend as I was looking through one of threads and this artist and album came up and let me tell you all, this has to be the funkiest trip I've heard in years. Not saying that new stuff from artists like Prince himself hasn't put me in stitches from a funk standpoint, but this album is just too much.
This album is.... *drumrolls*
AMALIA - ART SLAVE (2011)
It's definitely one of those records that will take you back and even though I've just been introduced to this, I haven't stopped playing this since yesterday. Amalia is part Chaka, part Betty Davis and then some and this record sounds like a lost 80's funk/dance record that was put in the vaults and released now in the 21st century. Honestly, its like Feel For You/Destiny-era Chaka has been resurrected. Too many comparisons I know, but this is one impressive release with a production that is headbusting! This is MY THE album of the year so far! Funkateers jump on this, please. You won't regret this trust me.
^^^ I agree she sound so like Chaka Jr! Out of the songs you posted I like Bonafide the best, although all of them are solid... On the other hand, my son said they all sound like they were made 30 years ago! I said--is that a bad thing? He said no, but he thought these songs were all run of the mill, somparable to most of the stuff I listen to on the oldies station. I said it had the ole school sound and production but that the songs were funk...and we need more real FUNK today!

An album like this, I wouldn't even compare it to the funk from 30 years before. It should stand on its own merit...and it does.

I agree! It stands on its own as an album, even though some of it sounds like an inspired 80's funk/dance fest. If someone put on this album, I wouldn't even be able to tell if it was recorded 30 years ago or today because it actually sounds like real FUNK! These tracks are headbusters for real.

Yeah I don't even put no time frame. It's THAT good.
His name is spelled "Opolopo." He is the primary producer of "Tokyo Dawn Records," which from what I see, have been putting out music since about 2003. Most of the albums sound just as impressive as this one. You can listen to full clips of Art Slave and other albums on the official site:

Correction about the Tokyo Dawn site: you can only listen to samples on there, not the full tracks. You can download the album and buy the CD, which I plan on buying a physical copy of Amalia's album when I get my paycheck. That's definitely gonna be the one. But for now, I gotta rock with my great digital copy!

The production on this is RIDICULOUS! THIS is the revitalization and rebirth of R&B funk from the 80's. Can't get enough of it. You gotta listen to this one good headphones or speaker set to get the full effect of this.
