R&B crooner R. Kelly plans on releasing a memoir entitled Soulacoaster. In a slight twist, The Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter said "I’m writing this book as Robert, not R. Kelly."

Kelly has endured a number of personal and business setbacks throughout his career including criminal cases, divorce, Jay-Z beef, and radio blacklist but he has still continued to be herald as one of the greatest recording artist of his generation. In the forthcoming biography, he believes he can provide full insight into his life stating, "I'm tired of being misunderstood. I will show you the tears, fears, and sweat. I will open my heart and reveal the good in my life as well as all the drama. I want to tell it like it is."

Kelly wrote the book with the aid of celebrity author David Ritz. The book has been described as "Part memoir, part keepsake; "Soulacoaster" unlocks the door to R. Kelly’s story as only he can tell it, promising his fans an intimate and unforgettable ride."

Oh LAWD! I'm not the biggest Kelly fan or admirer, but I do love some of his albums (e.g. R. Kelly, R., 12 Play, Chocolate Factory). I see he's really trying to play on Marvin's legacy because David Ritz is doing this book with him. I might pick this up considering that I've been spinning his new release, Love Letter alot lately.

Kelly himself has defined himself as that. I remember reading Michael Eric Dyson's Marvin Gaye bio, Mercy Mercy Me: The Art and Demons of Marvin Gaye and there's one section where he interviews Kelly and Kel drew comparisons of his musical achievements to those of Gaye's, which made me skip that part all together. I can't stand that either so I feel you and I wasn't comparing artists.

R. Kelly has been so inspired and influenced by Marvin's art, but he's clearly jocking him and many others as well for years. We both know that R. Kelly shouldn't be used in the same sentence as Marvin Gaye because they are on different levels. But it's even more apparent he's been jocking Marvin since he peak years in the mid-to-late 90's. Even with the promotion of his newest project, Love Letter, he's said that himself. This book has to be his way of jocking him more, not that it's a good or bad thing (if that makes sense). IDK, all I know is that I like R. Kelly's work, but something seems phony about this book.

You said that because R. Kelly has David Ritz writing his memoir that he's trying to be like Marvin Gaye. Though Mr. Ritz is known for writing several bios and memoirs.

FYI, during the promotion for his Love Letter he didn't bring Marvin Gaye's name up. He only brought him up in his documentry when discussing his influences. And the album is influenced by Sam Cooke, not Marvin.

Nobody cares enough to understand R.Kelly, let alone misunderstand him.

Yep Robert Kelly have always billed himself as the heir to Marvin Gaye's legacy, whether explicitly or otherwise. And when some writers(namely from Ebony & Vibe) damn near called him the "90s Marvin Gaye", you know it will go to his head.

And the David Ritz+Marvin connection seemed so obvious to me too Granted, I'm kinda interested to read this, provided he speaks the truth(and I do mean, ALL). We'll see.

If R. Kelly married a boy minor and recorded himself having sexual relations with a boy minor, would he still have a career as a major recording artist and much sought after songwriter? And would people have gleefully lined up to buy that sextape on street corners across the USA? It seems to me the sexual abuse of girl minors is tolerated and excused in this world we live in. I am disturbed by this.

He was impressive as far as vocals on "When A Woman Loves," but I agree, I'm tired of the Casio instruments he's been rocking with since '91. Kelly needs to get a real band to play on his records. He sounds better live to me than on record anyways because he utilizes a live band and it does suit him. The one song that I loved and he used a live group of musicians was "If I Could Turn Back The Hands of Time." Just a fantastic performance!

I enjoy his live performances too. His voice sounds really good with real live insturments so I don't understand why he doesn't utilize them in the studio That was my only problem with the Love Letter album.
