Bootsy needs to stop bullshittin' and put out a long version of "Funkship". This new album is still funky though.

I dunno....I spun this thang tonight (first time hearing the whole thing) & I.....really........dislike...this.
Just WAY too muddy with cameos (of all sorts) & none of em worked much for me. Liked "P-Univ" & "The Official Bootleg" way better.

Wonder what his lineup will be. I saw him awhile back at SOB's. One of the greatest shows ever-he had Bernie Worwell, Maceo & Co. They barely fit onto the stage, and he played forever. since Run & Them were saying "Here we go"

WHAT?!? I am LOVING this! Finally sitting down just now with a good set of headphones, and Bootsy is giving me chills! I am absolutely feeling this CD on a few levels. Not least of which in how it pays so much homage to not only the Funk, but all the elements that made it all real, from Michael Jackson to Rick James, including every Funkateer in between. The concept of the Funk University comes through loud and clear on this disc, and it's very, very funky, in my humble opinion.
One thing; I didn't bother reading too many reviews before listening, neither did I bother worrying about who would be on this project with Bootsy. I just wanted to play it, and let it move me... if it were to be. Turns out, it was, lol.
I liked it from the intro: "Spreading Hope Like Dope". That let me know right up front, this was some P-Funk! In the realm of "Prelude" to Dr. Funkenstein. Then it drops down into "Hip Hop @ Funk U"... which literally gave me goosebumps! This song is SLAMMIN!!! Now I suspect this is one of the songs that some people may not like because it has rappers on it. But I'm listening to it, and then I'm like '...is that Ice Cube?!?', then it was '...is that Snoop?!?" ...then here come Chuck D!!! I'm like... whoooah! These brother's did the damn thing. I think they ENHANCED what was already a very deep groove that Bootsy had laid down on that track. This is a GREAT SONG!
Another that stood out for me was "JB-Still The Man", a tribute to James Brown featuring Rev. Al Sharpton. This song is groovy as HELL. And Sharpton's "rap", again, just makes that groove even more funky. Particularly because you know that Al Sharpton was right there with James Brown through the thick and the thin, lol. They lay down a lot of history in this song. Lot's of "education" references and themes throughout this disc.
Some other favorites:
And the "Garry Shider Tribute" had me in tears! I LOVE George Clinton's weathered and road-weary voice singing on this track about his old friend Garry. Garry's wife Linda is singing here too. You can really, really, really feel the emotion in George's voice. For me, this song is an instant classic. This is the song I needed to hear from them in memory of Garry Shider.
"Stars Have No Names (They Just Shine)" sounds like it could be another tribute song, perhaps for Catfish. Another sweet, sentimental song.
And I was waiting for it... I knew it had to be on here... the quintessential Bootsy Love Song, lol. And Bootsy did not disappoint, he gives us TWO. The first one is "Chocolate Caramel Angel". 7 minutes of Bootsy love song in your earhole, lol. "Yummy, I Got The Munchies" featuring Musiq Soulchild continues the drift on off to Geepyland - That one real slow spaced out love vibe. It's "Munchies For Your Love" for 2011. If you're gonna remake a song, this is how it should be done. You hear Garry Shider all over this one. Another 7 minute ride off into space.
The CD ends with a very nice prayer, by Tom Joyner.
Before listening to this CD, I wasn't really getting my hopes up, but Bootsy has far surpassed my expectations with this joint. This, so far, is my most favorite CD in a long time. It will be hard for someone to come along and top this one for me, lol. Except perhaps if His Royal Purpleness should decide to pinch us off a piece anytime this year, lol.
Great job Bootsy!

Also, I think it's important to listen to a CD when the time is right, and when you're comfortable. I don't think it's ever a good idea to buy a CD rush home and immediately put it on... then expect MAGIC. I always wait to get my head right first, then with a good set of headphones, kick back, chill and let the music take my mind away.
I don't want to sway anyone's opinion, I'm sure many will still hate it. But I love this CD.

Man P I could not agree more! Sometimes I will buy a new CD and it might be a few days before I even open it!. I will wait unitl the time and mood is right before listening. I want to absorb the whole thing (lyrics, artwork, liner notes etc) without distractions and in the right mindset. And of course on a good stereo or headphones. I try making listening to my fave artists as an event. Which with new releases it is. Anyway, can't wait to pick up this new CD and enjoy this weekend. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

U guys are right on the money! It is an event when u get a new album. Sometimes I try to listen to an album while on break or after work on the train, but the distractions from the public hinder that oneness with the music I feel sometimes. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Oh man. Is he shagging that city?
I'll have to "sample" this record first before rushing into buying it. There's been some gems on his newer albums as well, but on the overall I haven't been feeling them.

^ Lol. I will be getting this regardless. P-Funk related releases are few and far between. Funny thing is, my fave Bootsy release of late is his Christmas album.Lol. I think it's better than his previous 2 studio albums before that. Imo. Still dig 'em though. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Well after going to 4 different places, , I finally got my copy from the only Mom and Pops store in town. Don't think about going to Best Buy if anyone's interested in buying this. Try your local record store. Anyway, can't wait to get in the right "mode" and listen to tonight. Btw, it has a cool holographic cover! Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

This album is pretty wicked! Jb Still the Man, Mind Control, Mirrors Tell Lies, Free Dumb, Hip Hop at Funk U are pretty good. There are a lot of layers on each track. A couple of them rock hard with thumping live drums, electric guitars over drum tracks and a lot of tribute to funk and funkateers. There are also a good couple messages hiden in sayings or lyrics through the tracks about politics, respect for eachother and harmony through music. I'm on track 13 now and .."if u don't know any of these jazz greats..just Google it babaa!" Lol. I like this album more than Play With Bootsy...too much hip hop on that one.
