I think George doesn't dig it that much nowadays because of the boy band stigma it gave Wham! If you checked out their material pre-Make It Big (the Fantastic album). Yeah it had some light pop affair but it was also gritty in other parts. And there was some masterful songs on Make It Big that never got the same push (besides Everything She Wants and Careless Whisper) as Wake Me Up and it's what Wham! (and George) is mainly known for besides from Faith.

There was no such thing as a "boy band" in the 80's. razz That term came out in the 1990's.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

There's a couple of songs that George isn't fond of these days

Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

Monkey

I Want Your Sex

and he forbids the Bad Boys and Young Guns videos from being released on any compilation neutral

Wow I like George Michael's voice! I like his songs from his solo albums...I'm not a fan of Wham but this song is catchy!

A catchy, well-written classic with great vocals from George. Still, it's the weakest of the album's 4 big hits.

Wham is hardly what you call a boy band. They were a duo.

Yeah, when he released Twenty Five, Monkey nor I Want Your Sex were included, I've heard he doesn't like either of them neutral

Yeah but they could be considered as one. They were the blueprint of many UK boybands that followed

It doesn’t matter lol their music was part of the blueprint for a lot of the groups with “boys” in them after.

They were the family bands

lol

If George hates Wake Me Up, then blame the British media for that one.

They were called vocal groups, or maybe "bubblegum" or "teen idols". Actually, the Osmonds were a barbershop quartet act at first. Still, "boy band" is slang that wasn't out before the 90's. It's like no one used terms to describe music acts like "crunk" or "grunge" in the 1960's.

'monkey' was in the 'ladies and gents' compilation though... as well as 'i want your sex' 1 & 2, if i'm not mistaken. my favourite george michael stuff is post 'faith' though. i think he's underrated as a writer and arranger.

Part 2 was included in "Ladies and Gentlemen" and Wake Me Up was in the TwentyFive compilation.

thanks for the clarification, tim... he did have something to do with putting that collection together, didn't he? and 'monkey' was there too... so if he had anything to do with putting them together he must not hate the songs THAT much, hee hee...

Yeah he did. From what I can tell, I don't think he HATES them but just don't wanna do them live anymore. Guess his heart is not THAT connected with it when performing live. His comments assume he don't give a fuck about them but I don't think that's actually accurate.

i do think those songs don't give him enough credit as a songwriter... i actually like his period of 'listen without prejudice', because he was like 'look, HEY! i am an artist, not a face...' and so he wasn't in the videos... i love songs like 'mother's pride'. and even listening closely to tracks like 'fastlove'; i think he's underrated, for sure.

ironically, a friend from kuwait got me back into george michael. i hadn't heard him since the 1990 album (which i loved when it came out- i had it on cassette), but i never heard his later stuff and she was raving about him and i decided to take a closer look. and i thought it was cool! i do see why he does get credit, indeed.

Yeah you have to be in George's shoes to understand where he was coming from. I can understand why he felt like his talents were overlooked especially during the period where he was popular.

It's technically the same thing though. Least that's how I look at it. lol I get where you're coming from though. They often refer to the Jacksons, Osmonds and pre-1966 Beatles as pre-boy bands.

Ironic, since these groups are actually bands, and "boy bands" are not. lol Also many of the so-called boy band members are adults.

THAT'S TRUE! falloff

You know what? You're right. Wham! was not a boy band and neither were the Osmonds/J5/Beatles. But yeah the "boy bands" and they weren't bands. lol

What a weird name.
