Joni Mitchell "Travelogue" After seeing a few Joni threads recently, they reminded me of this fantastic 2-disc set. There has to be other fans of this out there! Let's talk! If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in! |

I was meaning to pick that set up when it was first released in 2002, but never got a chance to. That's when I was first getting into Joni too. But alot of Joni heads love it, I guess I'll have to check it out one of these days.
Check me out and add me on:

I think it's phenomenal, not quite like any other compilation I've yet encountered.
It's like being invited along on a trip with Joni as she revisits old haunts that are fully reimagined with new arrangements and orchestration. It's Joni growing new trees alongside well-worn paths rather than having someone cherry picking their way to a "best of" that now seems totally vacuous, especially in this digital age where we, provided that we own the albums, can just to that ourselves.
I often find myself climbing into the backseat with a pillow just so that I can once again take this amazing journey that always leads to the same re-realization of just how incredible her music has been, even in the later years.

U write very eloquently. Thanks for your input! If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in! |

While I did enjoy Both Sides Now, I initially was a bit disappointed to learn that Travelogue would be yet another collection of old, orchestrally reworked material. When I finally heard it, it proved every bit as sentimental as I expected (for better and worse), and I think the instrumentation actually is somewhat overwrought on some songs (For the Roses, for example, sounds ridiculous in its melodrama ). But it has certain beautiful moments: Love gets an epic treatment fitting for sacred scripture; Woodstock matures here from a hippified recollection of the music festival to the retelling of something like a mini crusade; and Dawntreader, while there's not much room to improve on the original, reminds us of how picturesque a late '60s daydream of peace it was -- and still is now in an even more war-torn new millennia. πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.” |
