The Yellowjackets originally formed as a support group for guitarist Robben Ford, for his 1979 album 'Inside Story'. Since then the group has gone on to their own stellar Jazz career , while at the same time playing with everyone from DeBarge, Brenda Russell, Randy Crawford and Take 6 to Al Jarreau, Lalah Hathaway, Joe Sample and Bobby McFerrin....

Yellowjackets - "Top Secret" (1982)

Lalah Hathaway, with Yellowjackets -"Smile"

Marilyn Scott, with the Yellowjackets - "I'll Be Loving You"

Bobby McFerrin, with Yellowjackets - " Heaven's Design"

Take 6, with Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets with WDR Big Band - Azure Moon

Heaven's Design is one of my favorite songs.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Always a trip, those syncopated axxe chops of Robben Ford at the intro,

Jimmy Haslip swimming in there against the rhythm-stream as well with his slaps 'n pops,

and Ricky Lawson icing the cake by hitting it off with a trick on the hi-hat, lol

biggrin Ndeed! That guitar used to throw me off, lol !!! According to Russ Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip, the pattern is called a hemiola, with the guitar starting on 2nd 16th of the 1st beat and playing dotted 8ths.....

I've gotten the chance to see them at the Detroit Intl' Jazz Fest this past summer, even the audience wasn't nearly packed and they were the closing act for that paticular night, they still got down!!!!
