They made four great, bluesy/hard-rock albums, wouldn't exactly say genius. Started going down the pan from Draw The Line, though even then I think the singles are good, and continued to be up to Get a Grip(the deployment of Alicia's talents in the vids would've made even an awful song tolerable, in any case they're an era defining bunch of singles for me ).

They've got some pretty sweet bootleg soundboards from the 70s, especially the Central Park one.

Agreed, Pump is their best album in my opinion, and I like alot of the older stuff.

Yeah i think PUMP is one of the best Rock albums of the last 25 years, to me its not dated and to be honest i hate that term, "dated", because its usually used on decades that had indentity as opposed to the last two which almost have no indentity but also really lacked strong outputs, so to me things go hand in hand. But for PUMP to me it was best for them, it still sounds solid and can be played straight through, i personally dont get the GnR comparisons, everyone seems to think everything Loud and Rock was GnR influenced, but to me they were more watered down as time went on than any group.

Me too!! The term "dated" when refering to older material drives me crazy... if it were made today, it might be considered dated. However, albums that came out in the past have a sound that capsulates the time and era it was made in... That's part of the fun. Listening to an 80's Pop record and 80's production (with the huge reverbs and electronic percussion) for example, takes me back to that time period and represents the cutting edge sounds of the time. Not really interested in a record from 1989 that sounds like it could have come out in 2009. That's just me.

As for Aerosmith.... I've seen the discussions for years--with them and other bands. I have just never been one of those 'I like their old stuff, but the new stuff sucks' type of listener. Same applies for Rush, Metallica...etc. I usually find something to like and enjoy on all of their records from all the respective periods---not everything... but, there's always a few things to enjoy with each release. All my opinion, of course.

Okay, I've now bought Get A Grip and Permanent Vacation as a last ditch attempt to find a decent post-70s Aerosmith record.

I'll let you guys know my verdict in a few days.

Okay, after all the love I've heard for Pump on this thread I decided to revisit it and gave it a few spins yesterday.

I concede it is better than I initially gave it credit for. What It Takes is a great little ballad, F.I.N.E is good fun and Janie's Got A Gun is also a great track. Love In An Elevator and The Other Side are just too cheesy for me though. They remind me of everything that was wrong with rock music in the 80s.

I really hope the rest of their post-70s catalogue has something better to offer than Pump. I'm hoping it's one of those big fan favourites that I just don't get (like The Gold Experience - he did much better albums in the 90s if you ask me). I haven't listened to Permanent Vacation or Get A Grip yet, so hopefully they'll impress me more than Pump did.

They became too commercialised and pop-orientated working with hired hands and pop songwriters who write songs for Bon Jovi. Before 86 they were a legimate rock band but now they're a joke.

So now not liking Aerosmith is ignorant? I know plenty about "old school rock" I also know that Aerosmith is the punchline of classic rock..

Rocks and Toys In The Attic are flawless albums which inspired practically every post-70s rock band around.

I changed the title of my thread having gotten to know Permanent Vacation over the last few days. I don't understand why Pump gets all the love, PV sounds like a much better album to me. It's aged better and unlike Pump it doesn't sound as if they're trying to fit in with the fads of the time. It just sounds like a solid Aerosmith record. I love Rag Doll and Hangman Jury, Angel is a sweet song and Hearts Done Time and Magic Touch are great fun little rockers.

What to get next?? I have the first four 70s albums, Pump (which I didn't care for) and PV. Any recommendations on what to buy next?

DONE WITH MIRRORS (1985)

Definitely

For me, DWM and PV (combined) are slighty better than Pump. Pump might have the best singles, but the best album-tracks belong to DWM and PV (She's On Fire, Shame On You, The Reason a Dog, The Hop, Magic Touch, Simoriah, Hangman Jury, St.John, etc. wow, solid tunes).

Draw the Line (77) and Night in the Ruts (79) won't dissapoint you either. Not on the level of Toys/Rocks but almost as good as the first two albums (Aerosmith, Get Your Wings).

I can't recommend anything post-Pump other than the Big Ones compilation and the DVD You Gotta Move (live show, 2004)

Get a Grip is a good album but I do admit that it's the kind of album that only the hardcore fans can truly appreciate...

Odd, I find Permanent Vacation much more dated than Pump. The drums especially sound very '80s on Permanent Vacation. Pump also has teeth which is something that is generally lacking in Permanent Vacation. To my ears on Permanent Vacation Aerosmith are very much trying to sound like the popular bands of that era.

ha! No. Only Voodoo Medicine Man comes close...that song is amazing...

My Girl and Don't Get Mad are pure filler, and Young Lust/FINE are slighty dated...

And I've always preferred the live version of Monkey On My Back shrug

DWM and PM are flawless...well, The Movie stinks but that's the exception... lol

and I'M COMPLETELY sober, lol lol

Yep, DWM is worth it for Let The Music Do The Talking (which was originally a Joe Perry Project track) but is fantastic on this abum.
