I agree 100% Very polished pop, but still it sounds basically the same as anything you have heard a million times.

But she is just a kid, so this is really just the beginning of her career. I think the pop music press has given her a pass on her "potential" not really her output. At least that's my opinion because her album bored me to tears.

Good. Then again, you seem like one of the more level-headers posters in here, so I expect this from you.

If it bored you, it bored you. But you really think she sounds like stuff you've heard "a million times before"?

Well, you brought up opera singers yourself in the first place. Your friend being an opera singer and telling us about his views was supposed to give validity to your own views on Janelle Monae being out of tune all the time. So why did you even mention it if you feel now that it is irrelevant?

I don't feel it was irrelevant. That is who I spoke with. Maybe I did it to get a some validity in my opinions, because I don't know much about musical terms and don't really know the lingo to express my opinons properly, obviously. If my friend was a drummer, I would have said that they were as well.

Otoh, I feel that the statement you made was trying to imply that because you feel that all opera singers are out of tune that it somehow negates what he presented. Whether you felt that wasn't what you were trying to express, that's what it came off as. Maybe a lot of opera singers are out of tune, but we weren't critiquing an opera singer during our discussion at that time. We were talking about a pop/r&b singer. I remember that, in music, there was a note and you either hit it or you don't. I don't remember whether or not you hit the note to be considered a 'subjective' opinion now. If it is, then my bad, because I didn't get the memo.

However, calling her material "abstract music" is definitely an overstatement by your friend. You really shouldn't have quoted that, because it just exposes he doesn't have much of an idea how abstract music can be. Janelle Monae's music is not abstract music.

He said that based on the patterns (I guess rhythm patterns) that it was funk. But he mentioned that her singing, itself, was the 'abstract' part, from the best that he could explain it. While I do agree that he may not have a true understanding of how abstract music can be though since I don't think it's his thing or denounces it since he has a negative view of a lot of abstract art that we have constantly argued about. Or he may not be expressing himself properly with that term. That has happened before, but ultimately I'm not sure.

Try to abstain from backing up your views with such overstatements from other people and then toning them down yourself later on. It's an annoying tactic when you're trying to express a negative opinion on someone.
In case you are wondering why I am giving you such a long response: I personally dislike long diatribes about someone's artistic or intellectual output when the argumentation is illogical and contains obvious overstatements.

You, yourself, can not make a generalization, or OVERSTATEMENT, as well and then try to back up your arguments with it and then have the nerve to try and criticize anyone else for doing the same thing. Are you trying to be ironic to make some kind of point?! You have, absolutely, NO WAY of even backing up your earlier statement.

As for the point that you were trying to make: You are right. I should have revised what I had said. She does hit some of her notes in performances, but for a good portion of times she does not. If her hitting the notes outweighed the times in which she did not, obviously, this thread would not exist.

Some people post threads, and think their opinion is law. SMFH lol Like janelle monae said "you can't get too high and you cant get too low" So her singing isn't many people cup of tea.... fine! That doesn't mean she's tone deaf.
