OK SO I'M NOT CRAZY. I knew I wasn't the only one who hears "I Need Your Lovin'" on Jennifer's song Angel. I told my friend, the chorus is Teena Marie. She couldn't hear it.

I'll have to give it another listen, but I think parts of the song she does sound like Teena.

Let me guess...............Alicia Keys wrote that 1?

She is an American Idol singer. Skilled vocally, but not really anything anyone wants to go out of their way to hear.

It's fine when you're watching a silly game show and they are singing some of the best songs ever written, but give them a bunch of terrible new songs and...no thanks!

Exactly. People get tired of you after the exposure on such a show like this. Everybody associated with that show can testify to that. Even the MOST successful artists are struggling with that stigma. And clearly the last couple of years of American Idol finalists/winners have not lived up to the hype that followed them after their initial buzz. So it's no shock that Jennifer is falling in that same category. Even WITH the Oscar AND the Grammy, she's struggling to find her own identity, but then again so is everyone who was on that show. No one is immune, not Kelly Clarkson, not Daughtry, not even Carrie Underwood. Taylor Swift done took Carrie's title as "queen of country pop". Reality show contestants don't have much of a shelf life. Jennifer's lucky though because she's in the position where she CAN decide to make a change but under Clive Davis' thumb, that's probably easier said than done.

From my view, Jennifer's album didn't sell well the first week because of the "weak" lead off single. They thought since R. Kelly produced it, people would like it. For the most part, the song, "Where You At" is not that great. It has so many things wrong with it. Bad grammar being the first.

If they had released "Don't Look Down," or "No One Gonna Love You," I think the album would have sold more copies.

You can't be serious. No one is concerned about grammar usage in music. There are tons of songs that don't employ proper grammar, so that's not a reason the single was weak.

Honestly, I think her weight loss worked against her. I think people - especially women - felt she lost her "it" factor once she started to trim down. People looked at her as the chick that lost all that weight rather than J-Hud. There are people out there that want to see someone the same way all the time. Some thick women that were/are fans of hers probably see it as a slap in their face. The funny thing is, the reason she won the oscar was for playing an overweight singer, and now that's no more. I think there's a backlash of sorts over her weight loss.

Isn't this the norm with Alicia though? She always "recycles" past grooves or melodies and try to make them her own. Can any of these new artist create a freakin original melody or groove? ......Damn! sad

We were talking about that too. She does takes greatly from other classic songs. I don't hate Alicia. I buy her cds- didn't like her 1st one too much. But I have never seen her as this musical genius. I think Clive's marketing of her worked for and against her.

I take her for who she is as an artist. But I'm gonna need her to create her own melodies.

Wow, that would be so ironic given how people complain about the state of the industry.

That's because no amount of marketing is going to sustain an entertainer if they don't have it. That's the way it is and with Pop Music, it's here today, gone tommorrow. It's the rare few that sustains.

I think the fault lies with a weak single, "Where You At", which was obviously targeted towards a young audience, which I think is a huge mistake to market someone with Jennifer's voice like that. I thought that song was more befitting of someone like Beyonce and not a R&B belter like Jennifer. Most of the album is actually pretty good. I wasn't expecting much because I thought her debut was disappointing but I was pleasantly surprised at the over-all consistency of "I Remember Me".

Only 167,000 copies??? That's disappointing, because I've been rooting for her! sad

But who knows? Maybe some people thought that J-Hud didn't "Dee-liv-AAAAAH!" enough on her album. "Dee-liv-AAAAH! Dee-LIIII-VAAAH! DEE-LIIIII-VAAAAH!!!" lol

When you really think about it,167,000 copies sold in the first week isn't that bad. There are some artists who will never reach that amount at all.A strong second single could turn things around for Jennifer.

She was eliminated from American Idol kinda' early and almost faded into obscurity (like most of the non-winners or runner-ups do). After the movies and awards, I thought the American Idol thing had become a small footnote by now. You guys think that there is still an ongoing stigma with the American Idol thing that's contributing to her decline?

I'm just asking honestly, cause I'm interested in your opinions...NOT because I think I'm right or anything. I have no idea, really.

The only stigma is that the cd is WEAK.

It has nothing 2 do with Idol.

She made her fame outside of Idol.

Well I would personally love to see Jennifer move to a small label and do a "real" album, i still feel like she isnt even doing material she wants to do. Do what IDOL Katharine McPhee did after her deal with Jive, she went to Verve and though she is selling a quarter of what the jive album did, she is getting more respect from actual music people, and she is on a label that allows her to write and do music she should be doing.

With that said, it was pointed out what are disappointing sales, numbers are just numbers, i think in this case though, there was huge investments, 100,000 paid to "songwriters" per song, thats insanity in my opinion to get lackluster carbon copy songs of others. So i think when pay a million just to write a record add in all the other fees and you get a huge project that better sell a million plus the singles better sell millions to break even. Its moronic in this day and age to do this kind of business.

Yes, some can. Dare i say, there is some kid in his parents' basement/garage right now creating stuff that would probably blow your mind, but those are the ones who get bypassed.

Yeah, I know...I just wished that the general public would stop endorsing the crap that's out there. Maybe then that kid wouldn't get bypassed.

According to the Billboard 200 list she entered at number 2. That's hardly a disappointment. Chris Brown came in at number 1 but he had a different kind of promotion going on(tv outbursts, nude dick pics, et al.)

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Why does Clive seem to think that his female artists need an R.Kelly-produced song to take them to the top? confuse It didn't exactly work for Whitney Houston, did it? His songs are tedious."Where You At" puts me to sleep.

That's a good question. I have no idea.

Yes. I think that is such a problem with the winners of those types of contests. There are ALOT of people who can sing. But what will they sing, or create for their own careers? If you have a good voice and you sing a Stevie Wonder classic of course people will like it. But you can't get by on that as an artist.
