Was Sam Cooke murdered? I think there's more to the story of the whole hotel incident. I've read different accouts of what happened but I'm still unsure about it. I wonder why the cops didn't do any further investigation on it.
Thoughts? |

Allen Klein & Sam's family wanted to do an autopsy and investigation, but were talked out of it by Barbara Cooke. As far as the police goes, back then they were most likely not concerned by a "Negro singer" who had been shot. This was still in the "whites only" and Bull Connor era. It was also rumored Sam's death was a mob hit, and it's known for the mafia to pay the police off. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

Yes it's always been a fact that there was more to Sam's murder than remains to be seen, however, sadly this will be one of those cases where we will never know. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince. |

Beside Sam Cooke, I thought Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, MJ, and more celebrity deaths were suspicious. |

I think his wife Barbara had something to do with it. I've read that she married Bobby Womack 3 months after Sam's death. |

I think Sam was ready to divorce Barbara around the time he was killed. Then again I doubt she had anything to do with it though. [Edited 3/26/11 18:45pm] |

Bobby wound up with Sam's clothes too. Bobby's brother Cecil later married Sam's daughter Linda. Sam's brothers later whup Bobby's ass in what I read online that Bobby wrote in his book. He said the real reason he wore glasses more often was because his eyes were almost closed shut from their hits. |

That's crazy! Sounds like both Barbara and Bobby wanted him dead. |

Bobby broke up with Sam's widow because he had a relationship with Linda too. |

To this day Bobby's requested to NOT talk about the aftermath of his death (unless you got his book). I don't get it because Sam was trying to make Bobby a star. Bobby hadn't gotten over Sam telling him to let the Rolling Stones cover "It's All Over Now" but he got his first royalty check around the month Sam died I think. |

And Linda was still in high school when that occurred. Barbara almost killed him the night she found out. |

The mob wanted Sam to give them his publishing and record label SAR, but Sam refused. Sam was one of the few performers of the time who wrote his own material and had a label. That's where the mob hit rumors came from. The mafia ran much of the entertainment industry then, including Hollywood and Las Vegas. Also, people who knew Sam and saw the body said the bruises on it didn't match up with the story the two women told the police. The girl Sam went to the hotel with was a girlfriend or ex-girlfriend of a mafia guy. Sugar Ray Robinson also didn't wanna do business with the Mob. A Mob boss tried to get him to sign a contract where their fighter would retain his title against him and Sugar Ray refused. For some reason they left Sugar Ray alone. |

The Rat Pack, especially Sinatra, didn't really try to hide mob connections. They were going to kill or beat up Sammy Davis Jr once because he took out an advance or loan with them, and spent the money before he could work it off or pay it back or something. Frank talked them out of it. I think Frank paid the money back, but not sure about that. You couldn't work in clubs in Vegas and New York without going through the mob. Yea, his body was slumped over against the hotel office door and his right thigh was under his chest. That doesn't add up to the hotel manager's story and it seems like Sam was the one under attack not the manager. By the way, the lady Sam went to the hotel with is a well known prostitute and from what I've read they both have dated before. I'm not surprised the mob wanted Sam dead. He was making more money than most of the white acts out at the time. Owned all of his publishing rights and had his own label. |

I wonder how the classic artists had to deal with the mob especially when it came to Vegas, California and NY. |

Sam was the 2nd most popular act on RCA at the time. The 1st was Elvis Presley. Sonny Liston did sign up with the mob. The mafia was in the record business too. That's why a popular song is called a "hit" or a fast rising song on the Billboard chart was labeled something like "number 50 with a bullet". What are you talking about? It's true that Bobby Womack married Sam Cooke's ex-wife 3 months after he passed away. |

OK, not owned. Maybe I should've said it differently but some labels allegedly ran around with mobs. |

I believe he was murdered. I don't think his wife was involved tho. I heard that then whites-only lable heads didn't like the fact that Sam Cooke was doing real good on his own lable. Some mobs even threatened him to sell his lable but he didn't so... |
