Before there was Prince and the Minneapolis Sound, there was "Wide Stride".... Andy is a four letter word.

Billy Preston is a guy that never got his full props. That's something I never got. And why he's not in the Hall of Fame (either as a performer or sideman) is still puzzling to me. The guy was the "fifth" Beatle for chrissakes. Great joint.

Didn't he get his start with Sam Cooke? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Actually he got his start with Mahalia Jackson at the age of 10 playing piano and organ in her band. His career started off in the gospel circuit. Then around age 11, 12, Nat King Cole had him on his show and asked him to play in the W.C. Handy biography, "St. Louis Blues" as a younger version of W.C. so Billy had been around for a hot minute before Sam Cooke called on him. In fact, the time he first got with Sam Cooke, he was in Little Richard's band, they had just toured England where Richard and Sam were headliners (and the Beatles were the opening act) in 1962. Right after this, Sam asked Billy to provide organ on his Night Beat album.
