Rihanna can't sell out arenas

Rihanna’s American tour ‘flops’

Posted Wed 23 Mar 2011 16:50 GMT by Ben Gilbert in Behind The Music
She may be one of the world's biggest pop stars but Rihanna must be wondering what that actually means right now. The Barbadian star, fresh from her acclaimed new album, ‘Loud', which has spawned a string of global chart hits, is reportedly having real trouble getting her US fanbase excited about the accompanying tour.

Announcing the 86-date international jaunt last month, the singer promised that "an incredible ride" awaited all those lucky enough to be there. "I'm excited to get out on the road and share my new music from this album. We are going to have an amazing time and I know my fans are ready to get LOUD!" she gushed.

But it seems not that many of them are actually ready and Rihanna is said to be on the brink of axing a host of the dates due to a lukewarm response. "It has been a big disappointment. The ticket sales in big US cities like Boston are so bad, they will barely cover basics like the lighting and other arena costs," said a source...

THE REST OF THE STORY HERE:

http://new.uk.music.yahoo.com/blogs/behind_the_music/47876/rihannas-american-tour-flops/

Surprise, surprise. A chick that can't sing worth a damn and can't dance can't sell out arenas. I guess the public isn't as stupid as I thought they were.

Yea we know.

Her stans are the ones that need to be given the news. They swear she's on Beyonce's level. rolleyes

The only arena where she's competitive is on radio. That's it.

As much fun as we may make of current music tastes, at least this proves in a small way that not everyone has bad taste. All she is is a tabloid queen, nothing more nothing less.

Well she has some catchy songs, but she's terrible singing live, she can't really dance and despite being beautiful has no charisma so I don't think most americans would want to pay to see her perform lol

Beyonce is mostly hated on this forum (I'm not a huge fan either lol ) but at least she really puts on a SHOW. Rihanna is just stiff on stage.

and don't even get me started on Shitney Spears lol I can't explain why her tours sell out. disbelief

I knew this was a bad idea as soon as the U.S. dates were announced. I mean, she struggled and had to cancel a few dates when she toured here last year. And why do two back-to-back arena tours one year apart anyway?

She just added a 9th date to her 02 arena shows. So she's big overseas but the US is a soft market for her for a variety of reasons. Why her people set her up to possibly fail is just beyond me.

And from what I read, most of her hardcore fans thought this was a bad idea as well. You have to play to your strengths. Her projects this time out have been pretty sharp up to this point: perfurme tie-in, choosing the right singles, high-profile performances etc, Vogue/Rolling Stone covers, but these U.S. tour dates are just.....somebody on her team does not understand what they're working with. Is it Roc Nation/Jay Z? She should have started overseas and if word of mouth was good, add a few big dates in the U.S. and call it a day.

There will be another opening act and some think it'll be J.Cole. Cee-Lo, J.Cole and Rihanna? Alrighty then.

Is Nuno Bettencourt still playing with her? If not that must be the reason she is struggling to sell tickets. There is no way that the good people of Boston would bail on a home town boy. razz

^^^ i think so, he's credited as doing all the guitar on her last album, Gary Cherone is doing his Hurtsmile project (which is awesome) so there'd be no reason not to play with her (oooeer)

cool

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I don't think this NY Post bit coming out the week it did is a coincidence. Seems like payback on a few levels....

Greg Howe played in Justin Timberlake's first album tour band. The money he made from the tour helped pay for his CD "Extraction" with Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten. To this day, its one of the baddest fusion records I have heard.

Are we shocked??? First why and who was dumb enough to put her into a an area type show, to me, Radio City Music Hall is the biggest place she should play and even that i doubt she could sell out, but thats a slight on her, all of todays NEW artists, almost none can sell tickets, even when they put together these huge bills with 3 or 4 artists on them they still cant sell out shit.

News to everyone, Usher can sell out shows, Chris Brown cant sell them out etc...these artists can sell some albums but cant put asses in seats which at the end of the day, is your PAYDAY, selling 200,000 week one made you about 50,000 if you are lucky. So i really dont know why people are shocked that she cant sell out shows, name someone current that isnt a teen star or Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift that can sell out shows? Look at who still sells out shows regardless of an album selling, Elton John, BonJovi,Springsteen etc...artists that actually do shows that people want to see. I can see Rihanna shake her ass in videos and all over every magazine, why would i pay 75 dollars to see her NOT play live, Not dance, or have any stage personality at all?

Well she needs that world stage, because that is where the money is, the UK and other countries are in the Music Business still, the USA isnt.

Don't get me wrong, some of her songs are catchy but I'll stick to the studio versions lol

I am not gonna spend money on some overpriced Rihanna tickets to hear either a) lip sync or b) terrible live singing feeling ill

Dude that album, Saudades De Rock, came out in 2008, Nuno played on the 2009 Rhianna tour and on the Loud album that came out last year, Gary Cherone has a new project called Hurtsmile. Extreme are still together but Rhianna pays better than Extreme, dude has gotta pay the mortgage. cool

I think that you'd be surprised which pulled in more money, as a session player its alot less than being a band member that writes all the stuff and formed the actual band, regardless of the small venues extreme was playing they basically were selling out what they played, extreme did also release a live dvd and also cd from their 2009 show in Boston, they are currently working on new material on and off, as Gary does his thing and Nuno does his.

But big doesnt get you into arenas, you have to have some kind of show if you arent a ...band, and to be honest, alot of the lacking of support is coming from the RB/POP artists who are selling but not "selling" where it matters, i mean Beyonce and ALicia Keys together couldnt sell out Madison Square Garden, and thats your biggest RB females right there from the last decade or so, so if they cant pull it off why would Rihanna be able too? I mean shes pretty, but so is Kim Kardashian , and im not going to put down 100 bucks to hear her sing, maybe for something else, but not singing.
