Ja Rule Pleads Guilty To Tax Evasion
March 22, 2011
Jeffrey Atkins, the rapper commonly known as Ja Rule, pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to file tax returns as he admitted to not paying taxes for five years, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, accumulating a tax debt of $1.1 million.
A message left with Ja Rule's legal counsel seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.
Fishman said that as part of Atkins's guilty plea, he promised to pay the government his outstanding debt of more than $1 million.
"Each of us must pay our fair share to keep this country moving," Fishman said.
Atkins pleaded guilty to charges related to the 2004, 2005, and 2006 tax years, when he earned about $3.4 million in gross income in total, but the terms of his plea agreement state that the tax loss from all five years--he earned another $1 million in 2007 and 2008 total--be taken into account at sentencing.
His sentencing is set for June 13.
The counts on which Atkins entered a guilty plea each carries a maximum potential penalty of one year in prison plus fines and court costs.
