The media's treatment of Charlie Sheen vs Chris Brown

The R&B star's violent past is the subject of "GMA" interview. Why we give some stars a free pass on abuse Video

Chris Brown should be on top of the world. His new album F.A.M.E. dropped today, with already three #1 songs. It's also currently the most downloaded album on iTunes. So when Brown went on "Good Morning America" to talk to Robin Roberts, he was probably in a pretty good mood, and put on a game face to discuss his current status with Rihanna, his ex-girlfriend and pop star who Brown assaulted before the Grammy's in 2009.

But Robin didn't let the topic drop, and kept maneuvering their discussion back to the felony charges that Chris pleaded guilty to, along with the restraining order that the R&B star is trying to get downgraded. Chris struggled through the segment and then allegedly started getting violent: breaking the glass of his dressing room window, screaming, and ripping off his shirt.

While Brown's anger issues are certainly a topic for conversation, I just have to wonder: where was this tough line of questioning when Charlie Sheen was on ABC? After all, the actor also plead guilty to assault charges on ex-wife Brooke Mueller and according to the police reports taken that night, it wasn’t the first time Sheen had become physically violent with her, previously throwing her to the ground and causing a head injury severe enough to require medical assistance. (Neither Mueller nor Sheen reported the incident at the time.) And that wasn't the only incident. As Anna Holmes reported in The New York Times, Sheen's battery sheet --only against women -- is a mile long:

"In 1990, he accidentally shot his fiancée at the time, the actress Kelly Preston, in the arm. (The engagement ended soon after.) In 1994 he was sued by a college student who alleged that he struck her in the head after she declined to have sex with him. (The case was settled out of court.) Two years later, a sex film actress, Brittany Ashland, said she had been thrown to the floor of Mr. Sheen’s Los Angeles house during a fight. (He pleaded no contest and paid a fine.)...

Last October, another actress in sex films, Capri Anderson, locked herself in a Plaza Hotel bathroom after Mr. Sheen went on a rampage. (Ms. Anderson filed a criminal complaint but no arrest was made.) And on Tuesday, Ms. Mueller requested a temporary restraining order against her former husband, alleging that he had threatened to cut her head off, “put it in a box and send it to your mom.” (The order was granted, and the couple’s twin sons were quickly removed from his home.) “Lies,” Mr. Sheen told People magazine.

And yet when Sheen was doing his crazy-ass publicity tour, these items were barely touched upon, with interviewers like Piers Morgan and Andrea Channing not questioning Charlie's claims that he's never hit a woman. (Despite court orders and guilty charges that say otherwise.)"

This comparison did not escape Chris Brown, who tweeted directly after the "GMA" incident:

"I'm so over people bringing this past shit up!!! Yet we praise Charlie sheen and other celebs for there bullshit!"

Brown later deleted the tweet.

Look, all domestic violence is terrible, and celebrities are not above being held accountable for their actions. But what a dark double-standard that Chris must continually answer for his actions, unable to be known as anything other than "the guy who beat up Rihanna" while Sheen gets a free pass, possibly because none of the women he hurt were famous enough to bother caring about.

I have been wondering the same thing since this first happened. There's something really scary about how Sheen has played the media. Something the young and angry Chris Brown can't even attempt to mimmick. Yet, our media should be smarter than this.

Why won't people let him get passed that. If I'm not mistaken Rhianna got some hits on Chris too, actually didn't she put her hands on him first. She wasn't as innocent as she was made out to be. So, imo, she should have had her ass arrested and charged too. She's been allowed to play the victim for too long. I'm sick of the whole thing.

He was there to promote his music, not revisit his past. I'm not defending him by no means; he does need to control his anger issues. My issue is the people who want to act like they wouldn't have gotten upset too had they been in a similar situation. Please, they know they would have, maybe not to the point of vandalism, but they would have definitely addressed it. Remember Prince and Rosie's TAFKAP comments. Or Denzel telling the interviewer that they were going to stop the interview, go to commercial and when they returned, she's going to ask a different question. And they did just that.

So, would we be still talking about this had he (Chris) just abruptly ended the interview and left or threaten to leave if they didn't move on to another question? People tend to be a bit pity when they feel vested in someone's missteps, so yeah. Poor kid, he can't win for losing. He did the crime (took sole responsibility) and did the time. Let's all move pass this.

According to Good Morning Amercia, Chris was provided a complete list of topics in advance. As is the case with each of their guests, he knew before the interview began what questions he would be asked. It was his decision to feign shock and destroy property like a dangerous, unhinged moron.

As long as she doesn't have a knife or a glock in her hands.

I wasn't excusing him, that's was nowhere near where I was going with that statement. But at the same time, she had no right to repeatedly put her hands on him. As a woman, you know to never pick a fight with a male, because there's no guarantee that he will walk away. Not every male is raised knowing that you don't hit females, regardless of how many time she hits you first. Chris chose to hit back and he paid dearly for it; while the role that she played in the fight got overlooked.

Once upon a time or at least in the real world that non-celebrities live in, both of them would have been arrested. Everything that he was sentenced to do, she would have had to do as well.

That was my point.

I am a domestic violence victim, so I would never defend an abuser. But, I sought counseling and from that experience I was able to see the role that I played in the situation. There are clear signs that let you know who you are dealing with. This is true of all cases, but more often then not, the signs are ignored or explained away. Chris's temper didn't just occur on the day of the arrest. Of that, I'm sure.

I'm sorry, but I still can't agree.

It isn't about being raised a certain way. Not hitting women is one of those natural maxims akin to pedophilia. While I understand that some women do make their own problems by picking fights with males, it is still no excuse for a male to put their hands on them.
