NO. I don't like Alicia one bit and I am not crazy about Melanie-due to VH1 Soul playing that damn video of hers, "It Kills Me" 24/7-but they are different artists. For one thing, Melanie has yet to land a married man. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I like Melanie Fiona, but I feel like her music can be kind of blah and generic. When I saw her perform live before the first album came out, I was excited because I thought she was really going to ride that '60's sound trend', but most of her songs sound like any other track. If you will, so will I

Hell no. Those angry, bitchy lyrics are closer to Mary J. than Alicia. She has a very good voice but her songs all seem to be pissed-off and on some drama queen bullshit or princess of the pity party. I guess that's what flies these days with all of the immature, childish writing going on in R&B. Its like people regressed to their teen years. Is everyone getting high schoolers to write their songs these days or what? What happened to BALANCE? [Edited 3/22/11 16:13pm]

It's definitely Mary J.-esque in some way.

Well, there are two things going on. One, a lot of high school students aren't getting proper music education, so their lyrical skills are suspect, and two, a lot of young people today are extending their adolescent years well into their 20's. A lot of them don't seriously claim their adulthood until at least age 25, and some of them don't until they are 30. And yes, there seem to be a lot of angry/pity party lyrics going around. It's like they don't realize being in a serious relationship involves a lot of compromise; not flowers, rainbows, and unicorns.
