Question for all those old enough to remember when "Thriller" came out.

"Thriller", the single, was released as the 7th single from the album, 14 months or so after the release of the album. Would it be fair to say that everybody pretty much already knew the song before the video came out? Was radio already playing the song a lot based on the overall success of the album already? Or did radio ONLY play the singles, and thus when "Thriller" the single came out, it was still quite new for a lot of people?

By the time Thriller was release in 1984 most at Epic believed the album had done all it could, with hits like Billie Jean and Beat It already number 1s - the album having enjoyed 13 weeks straight at number 1 etc etc.

Radio wasn't necessarily playing the album in it's entirety, sticking mostly to the single as they were released. But by that stage Thriller had already sold something like 23 million copies.

What Thriller did was introduce the song to the non-album buying and radio listener. The video made what is pretty much a gimmicky song into something cool and hip. Once it hit, the whole world was re-introduced to the album and a whole new swag of fans was born.

Michael Jackson's mom talks about motherhood, family

By Alan Duke, CNN
April 26, 2011 7:56 a.m. EDT

Katherine Jackson said she dreads sitting in court for Dr. Conrad Murray's trial, which is set to start May 9.

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Katherine Jackson doesn't celebrate Mother's Day or birthdays for religious reasons.

But Michael Jackson's mother, who turns 81 on May 4, said she does believe in the tradition of sending flowers to a loved one.

"It means love, 'I was thinking about you today, so I'm sending you these flowers,' " Jackson said. "Sometimes when you might be feeling down and you get some flowers, it perks you up."

Jackson, who rarely gives interviews, spoke to CNN about the Katherine Jackson Flower Collection, which launches Tuesday on SendHerFlowers.com, just in time for Mother's Day.

"Flowers make me feel happy," she said.

While Jackson was eager to talk about flowers -- her favorites are red and yellow roses -- she was reluctant to speak on the record about what has made her feel sad lately.

Perhaps she would have the strength later to talk about her differences with the men who now control her late son's estate or the upcoming trial of the doctor charged in his death, but not yet, Jackson said.

She dreads sitting in court for Dr. Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial, which is set to last two months starting May 9, she said.

But she will be there, listening to testimony about how her son died. The judge has already ruled that prosecutors can show photographs from his autopsy.

"A mother's job is never done," Jackson said.

With the camera turned off, her frustration with the news media's coverage of the singer's life and death and of her family emerged.

For example, Katherine and Joe Jackson have sometimes been described as estranged. But after 61 years of marriage, they are still a couple in love, she said.

Her husband spends most of his time at the Las Vegas home given to them by daughter Janet Jackson, but it's not unusual for her to drive across the desert to spend a few days with her husband.

Joe Jackson often travels to Los Angeles to stay with his wife.

They sit together in court, sometimes holding hands.

She recently moved from the Encino mansion that was the Jackson family home for four decades and into a newly built mansion on a hilltop in Calabasas. Although the Hayvenhurst home is being remodeled, she hinted that she's not moving back.

With the camera turned back on, Jackson, who raised nine children and is now caring for Michael Jackson's three children, shared advice about motherhood.

She called it "the most important thing in the world."

"One thing about mothers -- they have to really be there for their children when they need her," she said. "They should be there at all times and know where your children are at all times. You must make your 'yes' mean 'yes' and let your 'no' mean 'no.' That's really the way to bring your children up."

It's the mother who holds the family together, she said.

"Yes, she's the glue that keeps the family going," Jackson said.

I want to know from fellow fans.

Looking back at 1978-79, Off The Wall had some serious competition

1978-

The Bee Gees- Saturday Night Fever

Bruce Springsteen- Darkness On The Edge of Town

Parliament- Motor Booty Affair

Marvin Gaye- Here My Dear

Doobie Brothers- Minute By Minute

Kate Bush- Lionheart

The Jam- All Mods Con

Funkadelic- One Nation Under A Groove

Kenny Loggins- Night Watch

1979

Joe Jackson- Look Sharp

David Bowie- Lodger

Prince- Prince

Rick James- Fire It Up

Stevie Wonder- Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants

among other albums. What set it apart from these albums and other hits of the time? Did it feel like it was a start of something new? Did it feel "new"?

people not being used to michael's higher register in don't stop till you get enough for starters, seeing him as "grown up" without his brothers, the video being considered high tech at the time along with similar videos at the time (eg. get down on it), mj having soul in his voice

For those who don't know, I heard the first quarter of a concert from Tokyo '88 leaked today. It's about 35 minutes, so from the WBSS to the first part of I Just Can't Stop Loving You.

It's great for the true fans to see this, but I have mixed feelings about it leaking, considering I know who had possession of the tape and how it leaked neutral

For me, many of the disco style music of 78/79 was getting somewhat formulaic - you only have to listen to Blame It On The Boogie to know what I mean. What Off The Wall did was almost bring a new sensibility to r&b/disco at a time when it was fading out. With perhaps the exception of One Nation Under A Groove and Prince, it presented something that felt fresh and was leading rather than following. Songs like Don't Stop, Rock With You, and the title track all took dance a step further along and the album in it's entirety offered a wider appeal musically that some of the other albums of the time.

It felt new. Here was a reintroduction to Michael Jackson - gone was the cute kid of the Jackson 5 days, here was a grown man with sex appeal - a mix of innocence and daring. People were impressed with who he was now, and the music was (and is) fairly timeless. It was rich in melody and groove, flowed with jazz undertones and was beautifully produced. It set the blueprint for what would follow in the few years following until a new more ambitious blue print was born in Thriller.

A fan was in contact with a collector who had (if I recall correctly):

Bad Tour rehearsals in Pasadena (we saw clips of these during The Legend Continues and From Motown To Your Town)

Dangerous Tour '93 rehearsals

Motown 25 rehearsal footage

Bad Tour Rome

Bad Tour Tokyo (the first 6 songs)

the collector watermarked the fan's name so if he leaked anything, his name would be on the footage. Some fans waged war on him after he announced that he wouldn't share with the fans (although he got information of the tapes from the very same people). He couldn't share because his reputation would've been ruined if he had (his name was on the footage and the minute it leaked, people would know who had it and they'd refuse to share more with him)

then last month, he decided that he was going to stream Smooth Criminal from the Tokyo show on Ustream. He did a test stream of the footage around the same time. Some fan who was watching, recorded and ripped the stream and shared it with fans. When word leaked out about the leak and the stream, Sony sent the fan a cease and desist letter saying if more leaked, they'd take him to court

Yesterday, the 6 songs leaked

Anyone else here think Lady Gaga is being more pretentious than usual, blowing 10 million dollars on a music video for an already-declared mediocre song such as Judas?

She just had to spend more than Michael did on Scream.... neutral

At least Scream was a quality song...and the vid was and is revolutionary...

I think it's great that people are trying to break his records as it's a good sign that people are trying/working really hard, but yeah...it's going to be a super pretentious video.

Hey I don't mind if people wanna raise the bar higher. But it has to be pretty freaking impressive in order for it to be considered a record breaker.

Judas is a mediocre song at best, and doesn't even deserve a video, let alone one that costs this much. confused
