Rob Hoffman posted this on Gearslutz about Much Too Soon

It was recorded very early on during the HIStory sessions. I believe at the time we only had the very beginnings of Stranger in Moscow, maybe the first part of the groove on They Don't Care . . . . MJ as working at Sony studios with Brad Buxer most of the time, and the rest of us were over at the Hit Factory doing odd bits of work, and mixing. Michael came in one day and said he had an idea and needed a guitar player. So they called in a local session guy, Jeff Mirinov.

He sat with MJ in the iso-booth and Michael patiently sang every note of every chord, and the melody. He had the whole thing in his head. Once Jeff had it down, Michael came into the control room and sang live while Jeff did some takes. He used an SM-57 into Bruce's Neve 1084's into an 1176, silver face, set at 20:1 just to tame the peaks. The three of us sat at the console, and I believe we did about 5 or 6 takes. All of them amazing. We recorded to 2" 24 track analog of course (Studer), 3M 996 with dolby SR. It would have been transferred to Sony 3348 for archiving, and possible overdubs. But the song was shelved and never brought up again. I was pretty shocked, one of my favorite MJ songs of all time.

Pretty magical at the time, my first vocal session with MJ, Bruce driving the ship, and Michael nailing every take perfectly sitting next to me. Tough to beat that !

I listened on iTunes, and that's Much Too Soon for sure, but it's impossible to tell if that's the version we recorded during History. The version we worked on was not orchestrated to that degree. No accordian, no harmonica solo, and I don't recall a guitar solo either. But ours could have been the foundation for the released version, I just can't tell.

As for it being the same as the song 'Learned My Lesson' from the 80's, I have no idea.

Thanks for posting.

Interesting about "Much Too Soon" but I guess this confirms it was worked on around 1994 or 1995.

I don't know if anyone will agree with me on this, but I think that out all of MJ's solo albums, Off The Wall is the best one. It's cohesive, melds well together sonically (I guess that would be the term for that), and it feels like there's a cool story of this guy who is going out to party.

In terms of single cut potential, I think it's his weakest. I mean...in all honesty I don't really listen to all of the songs on it unless I listen to it together as an album. Just a few really stick out like: Off The Wall, Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Get On The Floor, and maybe I Can't Help It if I'm in the mood for it. To me, those really standout the most and are the strongest.

HIStory, I thought, felt as if there was a message to be told rather than a story, personally. Even though his albums kinda go all over the place and feel like 2 seperate albums on one at times, such as Dangerous, I totally prefered that, in the long run. Each song has its own personality and I can listen to them on their own. I guess that was his vision after Thriller or whatever. To me, at least, the songs maybe except for a few don't all sound as if they were cut from the same cloth. In terms of that Thriller and Bad follow that same line of thought perfectly.

Invincible, to me, is in the same vein of Off The Wall, but it's still kind of all over the place in terms of content of the songs. I wonder if that was some sort of reflection on him and his state of mind at the time or did he think that he would just try to appeal to as many demographics?

Did that make sense?

Off the Wall was simple yes but there was a cohesiveness when it came to quality. The same can be said about Invincible in SOME regard though he did include parts of his work that he had already done on HIStory.

Sometime after Bad, he had the idea of making two concept albums in one album. lol That's why Dangerous and HIStory were so complex.

this is actually the reason HIStory overall is my favourite... i love his message/teaching songs more than anything. but yes,, sonically, off the wall was amazing. i think it was a great beginning to a career without his brothers.

Around this era, Michael Jackson was trying to be like N'sync which is, indeed, honourable (... lol ). The entire Invincible disc is full of teeny-booper cheese. That is, as a matter of fact, a step up from his previous albums where only the ballads where teeny-booper cheese.

Yes, the thread is dying. That's because of the everlasting pics and videos which do not, in any way, add anything to absolutely anything. The thread is also full of people whose common sense and all-round intelligence can be deemed lightweight. You know, the main requisites to be a Jackson bunch fan.

You did "Jam"?! And you actually mantained a straight face during the rap part? If so, I applaud you.

Anyway, It's harder to do it while hearing the unintentionally hilarious "In the Closet".

Stay tuned, though: Michael's parents and siblings, whose values, intelligence, behaviour, common sense and all-round morality forces us to elevate Charles Manson to A-list human, are just in the middle of their schemes to get money. Meanwhile, Murray is on his way to be exonorated from a doomed trial. That is: until your patience can no longer take it and you'll go back to sanity and just great music; the Prince fandom.

Omg......I don't know who you are but........It's soooooooo on!!!!!

I'm kidding ^_^ What's the point of fighting anyway? Michael's long gone and...ha...I just don't get mad at comments like this anymore =_=What and how you think of Michael is nothing but your own opinion XP I don't think any of Michael fans are going to listen to you...So there's really no point of spreading hatred at this thread...

I love Michael so much. You don't have to like him I guess...But you could've put your opinion more nicely...

P.S. I LOVED Jam. I giggled at the rap verse too XD But I still love it. I don't believe all rap should be dead serious or including profanity and those are the qualities that make it better. I appreciate this fun, friendly lyrics!

In a few words

Off The Wall - MJ at his free-est.

Thriller - MJ at his most ambitious "I will be noticed" mode.

Bad - MJ taking more of a musical stand.

Dangerous - a full picture.

History - his most personal and honest album.

Invincible - misguided.

this is what the albums represent for me:

off the wall- a symbol of creative freedom as an adult... using more traditional jazz phrasing than prior albums.

thriller- a symbol of persistence and perfection, in terms of marketing.

bad- the beginning of apron strings untied, be it with jones or blood relatives. and the beginning of a vast improvement of his art- he begins to utilize political messages as a driving force.

dangerous- far more blatant uses of biblical quotes and inspirations, going neck and neck with 'woman as temptation' messages. michael at his most contradictory, as well as finding a new creative voice.

HIStory- his most politically charged album, where you begin to see signs of him 'biting the hand which feeds' him. his honesty/forthright lyricism and blatant calling out of the government and corporatism makes this his best album in adulthood. this is also the most cohesive, in terms of weaving a narrative together.

invincible- i hear a warmth and maturity previously unseen in other albums here. there is a sort of weariness/resignation, yet hope in the cadences and tones. i hear fatherhood in those deep vocal chords.

(i will add 'blood on the dance floor here', which never gets included in his catalog under 'albums'... i think the songs bear a distinct honesty there as well, as he was pretty open about his addiction to painkillers, as well as seemingly responding to the state of romantic relationships, be it in music or orhterwise...)

It was very hard snapping a photo of Michael when he can’t stop dancing, and I was 17 years old, a lot of the pictures did not come out due to that and shadow movement with less quality high lighting than used today… I love and miss you Michael J. J., the world has not been the same.

Besides, aren't you the one who enjoys watching pro-wrestling? In that case, imagine the chairman of the WWE, Macmahon (I still remember some things), screaming "SHUT UUUP".

Im a fan of pro Wrestling especially the WWWF/WWF/WWE I love it very much, I find it beautiful and entertaining. I get lost in some of the stories.
