Curtis Mayfield

Hey guy's! haven't been on in awhile, been busy on set & in school:P

I know this is like a sin lol, i have had the Superfly soundtrack for awhile now and just this week listened to the whole thing, WHAT A GREAT ALBUM!

Not to mention it goes perfect with the movie, Curtis was a true poet, and lyrical genius i know his hits and besides that where is a good place to start for Curtis.

I have heard several other song's and really dig this guy, so what albums should i go to next?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

I recently got into Curtis' catalog

(just a few years back)

and I think you should check these out:

I thoroughly enjoy them as whole albums cool

maybe youtube "Trippin Out" (sampled by Camp Lo for "Black Nostaljack")

and "You're So Good To Me" (sampled by Mary J. Blige for "Be Happy")

"Get A Little Bit (Give, Get, Take & Have)" is a great album track

(from the album of the same title)

that should get you started! wink

because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

that is so COOL! mr. mayfield is like one of those dudes who seems like the nicest dude in the world, but you don't wanna cross him, cos he would put a foot in that ass!

i was sad when the scaffolding/lights fell on him at wingate. i am from brooklyn, so this was HUGE news when that happened.

I would also like to recommend these two compilations also...

Investigate this one for the thrid disc alone, which perfectly summarizes his later work from the late 70's-80's. So many gems on that disc, I'm telling ya!

Everything from "Curtis" to "Never Say You Can't Survive" is good. After that it's more of miss than hit. Albums like "Short Eyes", "Sweet Exorcist" and "Give Get Take And Have" might be a bit difficult to find. Depends where you shop (of course such problems won't be much of a concern with, uhm, alternative ways of acquiring music). However, if you are going to buy those records take into account that they are quite short. Listening to several albums by him in a row usually results in a more satisfying listening experience. They're not that different each other, or at least there aren't huge artistic left-turns on the 1970s records. Some disco started to creep in by the late-70s and "Do It All Night" was perhaps the first flimsy record by him.

If I had to do a TOP5:

Back To The World

Curtis

There's No Place Like America Today

Never Say You Can't Survive

Roots

Something along those lines. I can't say I'd enjoy "New World Order" too much myself.
