I actually made my own Patti collection called 77-83. LOL

I'll add mine later. This is hard because she has SO many songs. I won't include any Labelle songs though to make it easier...

Love me some Ms. Patti. Here are some of my favs from my fellow Gemini.

Joy to Have Your Love

Yo Mister

You are My Friend

Love, Need and Want You

If Only You Knew

New Day

Somebody Loves You Baby

If You Asked Me To

On My Own (Michael McDonald Duet)

Stir It Up

Music is My Life

Come What May

It's Alright With Me

With Labelle

Somebody Somewhere

What Can I Do for You

Messin' with My Mind

Candlelight

I had to edit this to add "It's Alright With Me." That song has such a happy groove! I miss those kinds of feel good, finger-snapping, sing-a-long jams.

While I don't like to play the race card, and I also believe Celine Dion has an incredible voice, I feel that Patti's version was the best version and she was robbed of the respect she was due in regards to this song.

in fact, miss patti did the video right after her sister's transcendence, and so you see her crying in the video. he describes her experience with that in 'don't block the blessings', which is a good book.

i actually don't recall hearing the celine dion version, until one or two years ago, actually. and yess, miss patti's version is better.

Yes, I remember her discussing the tears around the time of the video. It might have been on Video Soul or something like that. It made the song and video that muich more powerful to me.

I also remember a number of people took issue with Celine's version being the "version of record" considering that Patti's was first and arguably the best (no knock to Celine). It felt like another one of those Little Richard/Pat Boone "Tutti Fruiti" situations.

I may get shot but I think her most famous songs are overrated. lol

Don't get me wrong I love "If You Asked Me To", "Over the Rainbow", "Lady Marmalade", "Isn't It a Shame" (the two here from Labelle), "You Are My Friend", "If Only You Knew" and "Somebody Loves You Baby" but it seems if you're a YOUNG Patti fan, these songs are often mentioned first and it's quite gnawing.

I was also quite surprised at Andy's choices. "Feels Like Another One"? Wow, Andy. I would've thought you chose "Eyes in the Back of My Head" or "Music is My Way of Life" or some shit.

But I TAKE it from SOME people here that NO ONE knows the VINTAGE Patti music at all. confused

Some of her most famous songs are classics to me, but others I can take or leave. However, we were limited to 10 songs - 10 favorites, and I still went over my limit. I did include "Joy to Have Your Love," "Music is My Way of Life," "What Can I Do For You," "Messin' With My Mind," and "It's Alright With Me." I will admit I don't know the Blue Belles stuff that well. However, there are some lesser known Patti songs that I love as well, but they didn't come to mind. What do you think of these? They are in my top 20.

Solo

With Labelle

With Grover Washington Jr.

^ Great tunes. Proof she didn't need to sing at higher octaves to still be powerful. ESPECIALLY in "Ain't That Enough?" Hell that's one of my all-time favorites from her. And "Joy to Have Your Love" is the SHIT, ya heard me?! cool

She has been hit and miss since at least 1986.

if we're going with BLUEBELLES songs, my favourites of all times are their version of 'you'll never walk alone' and 'academy award'.

for LA BELLE, my favourite i think will always be 'who's watching the watcher', and 'don't bring me down'.

You're so right about the octaves. I actually just edited to add a couple more that I forgot. You got me going in on my Patti smartlist. lol

I actually have "Joy to Have Your Love" in my car right now on a crate digging CD I made for myself.

I took the question as Patti LaBelle songs (meaning as a solo act) - mixing in Patti LaBelle and The Bluebell songs and LaBelle songs seems unfair - they were both groups.

I am not a Patti LaBelle fan, did like her better in the group LaBelle though.

As a solo act - I couldn't list 10, because most of her material is lackluster, but my Top Five would be:

1. If Only You Knew

2. On My Own

3. Joy To Have Your Love

4. The Right Kinda Lover

5. Feels LIke Another One

and was it ever hard to think of 5. She screams and screeches and destroys the melody oin a song way too much, almost imposiible to sing-a-long on the hook, especialy in live shows. I have seen her 2 x live, once with LaBelle and once solo on a bill with Luther Vandross and Gladys Knight. She destroyed "If Only You Knew' with all those histrionics and changing the melody of the song.

She sounds a g.d. mess when she sings gospel songs.
