Prince Concert in the Carolina's...MJ related..

Someone made an interesting comment the other day...she said she was attending the Prince concert here in North Carolina because that's the closest she will ever get to Michael Jackson. Ok...ummm..really. I didnt know what to make of that. They're two different types of performers...can anyone make sense of what she meant? Im baffled

I am not looking forward to this discussion.

Well, I would love to believe that, but there were many discussions on this topic that were not always civilized. I hope this turns out nice.

Coming from a huge fan of both artists, this thread will not have a successful ending....

Maybe she meant closest to seeing him by seeing the other great male performer of his generation? Obviously both beyond compare, but really, did anyone else come close in their respective genres?

She obviously doesn't know much about either of them. Unless she just meant in the sense that they were the two black megastars in the 80's.

Having been lucky enough to see both - it's just a completely random comparison on any other level.

Sure Michael and Prince are two totally different artists but since NO ONE doe a show like they do. lol And since Michael's gone, Prince is damn sure one of the next closest you can get 2 perfection. ;-

I saw MJ once, in Detroit, because my sis had an extra ticket. Actually, really good seats.

Nothing memorable about that show.

I've seen Prince about 15 times. Bad-ass everytime.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I've seen Prince 17 times as of February and never once saw MJ perform at a live show and never felt that I was missing anything. Going deeper I never saw any parallels between Prince & MJ at any point in their careers. In some aspects they were completely opposite of each other.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

In her opinion, does she consider him to be the poor man's MJ?

Such hate. Its obvious why she said that.

They're 2 Black legends from the same time period. Michael was the greatest entertainer ever.

and yeah, even though i am a huge advocate of michael's (and he is the greatest artist in the entire world to me (next to STEVIE)) i have seen prince live, and it's actually one of the best shows i've ever seen. but i don't get the same feeling of warmth watching him. that's just me. their performance styles are actually quite different.

perhaps i'm wrong, but prince seems to use dance similar to james brown, how the dance is sort of a symbol for leading the band instrumentally. it's a very clever/brilliant thing james brown did, and prince does. michael's dancing to me, is a bit more 'spontaneous/random', even if he dances the same dance. looking at 20 performances of, say, 'stranger in moscow', sometimes he shortens a step, or turns a different way. his dancing isn't as presicion-sharp as prince, in terms of leading the band.

i'm not sure what prince does now, i haven't seen him in years. i would say both are brilliant performers, but quite different. i just happen to prefer michael.

i love watching this every time... michael was quite graceful, and paid the utmost respect to his teacher. prince, i'm not sure if it was an act, or if he was actually high on something (or was he just showing off)? i also wonder all the time if mr. brown had a word or two with mr. nelson after the show.

I only saw MJ in concert once (although several times in person after that). Seen Prince 15 times. I do admit the HIStory tour that I saw was terrible, especially looking back on videos, although at the time it was a magical, memorable day for me.

I agree. The premise is unclear to begin with, so ultimately no(n)sense will come from it.

A civil discussion in a potential MJ v. Prince thread? On a Prince forum?

I wish I was able to see MJ live. Everyone knows the guy was a great performer. Watching This Is It, made me realize that magic was still there. Because of this cant compare to Prince. But still don't think they are very comparable regardless, as they were/are very different perfomers imo.
