Your best songwriters ever (lyrics)? Your top 10

When I was younger I never paid much attetion to the lyrics, I was more into the "music" itself... But for the past few years i've been listening to the words and some songwriters are great poets...

Her's my top 10 when it comes to songwriters (lyrics), in no particular order:

- Tom Waits

- Bob Dylan

- Bob Marely

- PJ Harvey

- Eminem

- Tupac

- David Bowie

- Trent reznor

- Prince (lurking)

- Lauryn Hill

- Lil wayne (kidding biggrin)

... Who are your favorite songwriters?

Quotes from your favorite songs are welcome smile

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Let me add, that I'm not a big Beatles fan. But McCartney and Lennon are and were great songwriters. Prince is lucky I'm a fan. lol His songwriting is clearly an afterthought at times.

My next ten would be:

11. Holland/Dozier/Holland

12. Michael Jackson

13. Gamble & Huff

14. Terence Trent D'Arby

15. Ashford & Simpson

16. Bob Dylan

17. Curtis Mayfield

18. Bruce Springsteen

19. Carole King

20. Barry Gibb

I think I did this second list to see if I could actually get George Michael in here. Didn't happen.

Jam & Lewis also didn't cut it. They'd be 21st I think.

I was waiting for someone to say Carole King. I am surprised she is so low on your list. I think she is a wonderfully gifted lyricist.
